Majoring in Construction Engineering Technology:

The bachelor’s degree program in construction engineering technology builds on a strong foundation of mathematics, physics, computers and engineering sciences, with an excellent blend of theory and professional practices in the construction industry. The curriculum focuses on project management, construction methods and engineering design principles. You will learn about structural design, surveying, estimating, construction materials, computer applications, scheduling, accounting, safety, project management, contract and business law. The program is enhanced by a joint teaching effort with other engineering technology programs and the College of Business Administration.

This program also provides industry with knowledge about the development and applications of new technologies as they pertain to the construction industry. An advanced light guage steel testing laboratory is being added to the program as part of its partnership with NUCONSTEEL™.

Plans are for the construction engineering technology program to seek accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) by 2009.

The department’s faculty members have degrees in aerospace, civil, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical and nuclear engineering and engineering technology. They average 10 years of industrial experience. Faculty members have worked for organizations such as Airgas Inc., Boeing Military, Electrotest, General Dynamics (Lockheed Martin), General Electric, Houston Engineering and Research, Integrated Technologies Inc., Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, among others.

Career Potential:

The construction engineering technology program helps you to develop the technical knowledge, management skills and business understanding necessary to be successful in today’s construction industry. The knowledge, skills and abilities gained in this program will enable you to work in a variety of construction and construction-related professions. Those professions include estimator, scheduler, contractor, project engineer, field supervisor, project supervisor, project superintendent or project manager.

To advance in the field of engineering technology, you may need to earn a master’s degree. UNT has one of the nation’s largest engineering technology graduate programs. To teach engineering technology at a university, you may need to earn a doctoral degree.

Getting Hands on Experience:

The engineering technology department receives thousands of dollars per year in research projects and grants. Current faculty research interests include conceptualized systems, corrosion, cryogenic power sources, curriculum development, engineering/operations management, environmental concerns, finite element techniques, fluid dynamics, highway illumination, industrial adhesives, industrial training, materials engineering, metal and ceramic matrix composites, plastics processing, process control systems, space nuclear reactors, surface coatings, transportation studies, and welding and joining. For a senior project, you may work in one of these areas with a faculty member and/or for an industrial sponsor.
