Career Academy Program (CAP) Coordinator/Interpreter

JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERALRESPONSIBILITY:

The coordinator of the CareerAcademy Program for post-graduates will be responsible for managing appropriate specific need classes and internship experiences for the students working within the Romney community or nearby municipalities.This position will relay spoken messages as sign language (and vice versa) for various campus stakeholders as assigned.

Director of Special Education, Admissions and Attendance

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code § 18A-2-5; AA or BA in Interpreting or ASL preferred.
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) recognized certification(s) preferred. (In the event that the applicant pool does not contain fully certified Level III RID/NAD candidates, other national or state interpreter designations will be considered.)
  • Must be registered with West Virginia (or applicable state of residence) recognized list of interpreters
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organization skills required.
  • Knowledge of technology, equipment and services specific to deaf and hard of hearing and blind/low visionindividuals
  • Be cognizant of the culture and customsfor each respective population served
  • Must meet physical demands of signing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 10 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).

Work environment is subject to change due to unexpected circumstances as determined to the Superintendent.

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Work hours may vary occasionally, based on the needs of the program. Some travel required on an infrequent basis.

FUNCTIONS ANDDUTIES:

  1. Follow applicable school and department policiesand procedures as well as WV Board of Education regulations andpolicies.
  2. Be available with little to no notice to interpret/reverse interpret for WVSDB stakeholdersduring assigned work hours.
  3. Performs advanced levels of interpreting.
  4. Maintainsa minimum of an Advanced SLPI rating to adequately perform job responsibilites.
  5. Have or be willing to acquire skills in the Pro-Tactile method of interpreting for Deaf/Blind individuals.
  6. Understand, interpret, and apply administrative and office policies and procedures as well as pertinent laws, regulations, standards of practices and ordinances in relation to job placement for students.
  7. Observe the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  8. Must stay well-informed of current standards of practice related to sign language interpreters.
  9. Maintain positive and professional relationship with all WVSDB stakeholders.
  10. Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software applications with ability to adapt to changing technologies and learn functionality of new equipment and systems.
  11. Perform functions and duties of position in an efficient, productive and professional manner.
  12. Demonstrate positive work habits, including attendance and respectful collaboration, as delineated in WVBE Policy 5902 “Employee Code of Conduct” and in WVSDB personnel policies.
  13. Maintain accurate filing system as requested.
  14. Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 - “Employee Code of Conduct” and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
  15. Communicates in a positive, professional and courteous manner with all students, staff or visitors.
  16. Maintain strict confidentiality of all parties due to frequent exposure to private or sensitive information.
  17. Handles matters expeditiously, proactively, and follows-through onprojects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures.
  18. Work independently and effectively in the absence of supervision.
  19. Communicate clearly and concisely, orally, visually or in writing.
  20. Participates in annual professional as required by WVSDB policy.
  21. Coordinates the Career Academy Program (CAP) activities and special events with the Division of Rehabilitation Services.
  22. Collaborates with the high school team members at both deaf and blind schools to ensure that students are benefiting from both academic and transition services.
  23. Identifies and plans both paid and non-paid internship experiences at places of business
  24. Coordinates training workshops for job coaches working with students
  25. Assists with marketing the CAP to WVSDB staff, students, parents, and the community, and coordinates all publicity, brochures, and events.
  26. Other related responsibilities and duties as assigned.

SALARY:

240 day annual contract (12 month). WVSDB AuxiliarySalary Schedule. Exempt position.
