MUSIC & MEMORY

CERTIFIED FACILITY

What is Music & Memory?

Music and Memory is all about bringing joy into the lives of people suffering from Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia and a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments.

How does it work?

Music and Memory Program is about using iPod Shuffles to play music that the resident enjoys. Therefore, bringing back memories from long ago. Usually the music that a resident likes to listen to is the music that they grew up listening too. If the resident is not able to communicate their likes then we rely on family and friends to help make suggestions.

How does personalized music help the residents?

Studies have shown that listening to pleasurable music can help reduce pain by more than 20%. Listening to music often results in decreases in agitation, anxiety, sleeplessness and depression.

Canadian researchers sum up our program’s main benefits this way:

·  Those who don’t talk much are more verbal.

·  Those who’ve been physically inactive move about more.

·  Those who’ve been depressed are happier.

Benefits of Personalized Music.

Personalized music has many benefits for elder care residents.

·  Staff are able to give our residents with advanced dementia pleasure through music when they are most often difficult to reach.

·  Resident’s are more cooperative, attentive and willing to accept care.

·  Because residents are calmer and less agitated, sundowning (confusion and restlessness) is often reduced or eliminated.

·  Family and staff are able to connect in a more meaningful way with residents around music and memories.

·  Personalized music provides a valuable tool for the effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic medications.
