This is a structured workshop led by two experienced tutors,aimed at both new writers and or poets already working on a novel, a collection of short stories, poetry or a play.

A dynamic 14-day period of writing exercises, readings and assignments, coupled withpersonal writing time to really hone your craft, characterizes this internationally recognized residential creative writing workshop.

Applicants, 20 years and above, who are Caribbean nationals residing in the Caribbean, are invited to submit application forms and 5 pages as samples of their writing:e.g. from a complete story,a novelette, 3 -5 poems, or a one-act play no later than December 15th 2013to the following address: Writers Workshop, Department of Creative & Festival Arts, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.

Course fee for all Caribbean writers

The standard fee for the 2014 residential workshop is USD $500 (TT$3000).This includes all workshops, tutorials and readings, and full board and accommodation. Meals are fully vegetarian, but access to other meal choices and liquids are available a short walking distance from the workshop venue. The very secure location is on the north-easterncoast of Trinidad; and includes its own small, private beach; while nature trails and opportunities to access the famous Trinidadian nesting beaches of leatherback turtles are available.

COURSE FACILITATORS / Tutors:

Prof. Funso Aiyejina

Funso Aiyejina is a poet, short story writer, playwright, cultural researcher and university lecturer. He was educated in Nigeria, Canada and the Caribbean. He is Professor of Literatures in English and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, St. Augustine. Trinidad and Tobago.

He is the author of A Letter to Lynda and Other Poems (winner of the Association of Nigerian Authors’ Poetry Prize), I, The Supreme and Other Poems and The Legend of the Rockhills and Other Stories (winner of Commonwealth Writers’ Prize) and The Character Who Walked Out On His Author (a play). He has been afacilitator of the Cropper Foundation’s Residential Caribbean Creative Writers’ Workshop since its inception.

Dr. Merle Hodge

Merle Hodge is a teacher; writer; social activist. She has a B.A and M.Phil. from the University of London and a Ph.D. Literatures in English, from the University of the West Indies. Apart from her work at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, as lecturer, coordinator and facilitator of creative writing workshops, she has served as a resource person and active member of several NGOs.Merle is the author of two novels Crick Crack, Monkey and For the Life of Laetitia. She has been a facilitator and tutor with the Foundation’s Residential Creative Writing Programme since its inception.

Past Cropper Foundation Participants:

Over 100 writers from the Caribbean Diaspora have competed and taken part in these workshops held in a variety of locations: Grand Riviere, Balanadra, Gasparee Island off Trinidad’s coast, and in Tobago. Many of the participants have gone on to win competitions, and/or publish their works.
