Second Grade
- Course Description
This course is designed to further the students’ previous experience in art. Building technical skills acquired in K-1, students will begin to use these skills to effectively communicate their ideas through visual works.
- Course Objectives
- To stimulate the imagination of each child and extend and deepen the child’s capacities to search out meaning and interpretation on a work of art.
- To assist the child to live harmoniously with other children through group activities.
- To provide an atmosphere through which students develop the ability to see forms and relationships in 2-D and 3-D environments.
- To instruct in the safe and proper handling of tools, materials and equipment.
- To incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
- To foster awareness and understanding of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- To help students use knowledge of the elements of art in order to identify major styles in art.
- To help students recognize emotional quality in a work of art.
- To help students critically judge the aesthetic value of a work of art based o knowledge of design, harmony, balance and other principles of art.
- To help students begin to see how events and changes in history may have influenced the development of art.

As students become more adept at manipulation tools and materials, a greater emphasis will be placed on ideas and self-expression.
- Color Theory
- Students will begin to increase their palettes in order to more successfully communicate an idea.
- Review color theory
- Introduce value using paint
- Create a value using paint
- Create a chart illustrating at least 5 values of one color
- Create a painting illustrating the ability to mix a variety of values from a single color
- Hatching/Cross Hatching

- Begin to explore emotional value of color
- Media may include tempera paint, watercolor, markers, colored paper, crayons, oil pastels, pastels and chalk

- Students will experiment with coil method of construction
- Students will experiment with textures in clay

- Students will combine elements of art with the creation of 3-dimensional structures.

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Execute a 5-stage value chart.
- Create a painting using a variety of tints and shades of one color.
- Create a piece of art illustrating the emotional value of color.
- Discuss emotional quality in a work of art.
- Create a piece of art demonstrating the use of proportion.
- Use perspective in a 2-D work of art.
- Create a piece of art illustrating rhythm.
- Create a clay sculpture using the coil method showing texture.
- Create a paper sculpture demonstrating combined elements of art.
- Discuss a work of art based on a greater knowledge of the elements of art.
- Recognize and discuss works by at least 4 artists.
- Write a sample critique of a work of art.
- Evaluation Procedures
This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.4
- Evaluation of success will be based upon creative abilities as exhibited in studio projects and ability to follow directions.
- Students’ progress will be on an individual basis. Instruction will be varied from whole class presentations to small group and individual demonstrations.
