Second Grade

  1. Course Description

This course is designed to further the students’ previous experience in art. Building technical skills acquired in K-1, students will begin to use these skills to effectively communicate their ideas through visual works.

  1. Course Objectives
  2. To stimulate the imagination of each child and extend and deepen the child’s capacities to search out meaning and interpretation on a work of art.
  3. To assist the child to live harmoniously with other children through group activities.
  4. To provide an atmosphere through which students develop the ability to see forms and relationships in 2-D and 3-D environments.
  5. To instruct in the safe and proper handling of tools, materials and equipment.
  6. To incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
  7. To foster awareness and understanding of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  8. To help students use knowledge of the elements of art in order to identify major styles in art.
  9. To help students recognize emotional quality in a work of art.
  10. To help students critically judge the aesthetic value of a work of art based o knowledge of design, harmony, balance and other principles of art.
  11. To help students begin to see how events and changes in history may have influenced the development of art.

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5

As students become more adept at manipulation tools and materials, a greater emphasis will be placed on ideas and self-expression.

  1. Color Theory
  2. Students will begin to increase their palettes in order to more successfully communicate an idea.
  3. Review color theory
  4. Introduce value using paint
  5. Create a value using paint
  6. Create a chart illustrating at least 5 values of one color
  7. Create a painting illustrating the ability to mix a variety of values from a single color
  8. Hatching/Cross Hatching

  1. Begin to explore emotional value of color
  2. Media may include tempera paint, watercolor, markers, colored paper, crayons, oil pastels, pastels and chalk

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Execute a 5-stage value chart.
  2. Create a painting using a variety of tints and shades of one color.
  3. Create a piece of art illustrating the emotional value of color.
  4. Discuss emotional quality in a work of art.
  5. Create a piece of art demonstrating the use of proportion.
  6. Use perspective in a 2-D work of art.
  7. Create a piece of art illustrating rhythm.
  8. Create a clay sculpture using the coil method showing texture.
  9. Create a paper sculpture demonstrating combined elements of art.
  10. Discuss a work of art based on a greater knowledge of the elements of art.
  11. Recognize and discuss works by at least 4 artists.
  12. Write a sample critique of a work of art.
  1. Evaluation Procedures

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.4

  1. Evaluation of success will be based upon creative abilities as exhibited in studio projects and ability to follow directions.
  2. Students’ progress will be on an individual basis. Instruction will be varied from whole class presentations to small group and individual demonstrations.
