Minutes for the Meeting held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Submitted by Mrs. Daley for the committee’s approval.

In attendance: Mrs. Bish, Principal, Mrs. Daley, AIS Teacher and SLT Chair, Mrs. Smith, 5th Grade Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Wilber, 6th Grade Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Murphy, 6th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Fuller, 5th Grade Teaching Assistant. Mrs. Fahr, Parent.

Absent: Mrs. Werba, 6th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Vilato, Parent, Ms. Rennie, 4th Grade Special Education Teacher.

Mrs. Daley read an email from Mrs.Vilato, which had a number of points for discussion. 1) where and how to purchase pizza or other things for the recognition party, 2) acquiring pictures and info for the PTA newsletter and the Poughkeepsie Journal3) linking school bus behavior with the SLT and Bullying programs.

Even though Mrs. Vilato suggested that we use Fat Franco’s for pizza because they give a discount, many members like Colanaro’s pizza. Mrs. Bish added that Colanaro’s is part of our school district and closer. We will check further into the prices to see if the difference is significant.

Mrs. Bish said that there were 22 students recognized for the trait of Kindness at the end of November. With these numbers each month, we will have more students than the projected (6traits x15students =90 total and $2 per person) The grant we received is for $180. We will look into ice cream donations from Stewarts when we get closer to April.

Because the nominated students maybelarge groups, it makes a picture near the bulletin board too difficult. Mrs. Bish will make sure the photos of the groups of students taken on risers are available to Mrs. Vilato for publication.

Mrs. Bish asked to have the theme of respect extended for a week into January, since December is a short month and it takes time to make nominations and create award letters and certificates. Members agreed.

Mrs. Murphy has been working to promote the use of the bulletin board for nominating people that show respect. The Orange Team Student Council decorated the board. Mrs. Murphy made an announcement today. Students may fill out a form (available in their classrooms) whenever they notice someone who is being respectful. Mrs. Murphy was wondering if the students did not know how to use them. The Committee brainstormed ideas of how to promote awareness. To start, Mrs. Bish will share an example of respect where she saw a 6th grade class display respect in the hall. Orange Team students will do a skit and maybe play the RESPECT song. Mrs. Murphy is looking for kid-friendly quotes so send them her way. Mrs. Bish will schedule the Lunch Monitors so that they can play the DVD during DEAR time. Teachers will have to be involved to set up/remove the TV.

We also thought that students might not notice the bulletin board. Maybe a large eye-catcher, like the picture of Derek Jeter would help?

Regarding Mrs. Vilato’s concern about bus behavior, Mrs. Bish said it is a concern District-wide. She is getting a bus policy in place as part of the Responsibility theme for January. Teachers expressed how they include the bus, playground and cafeteria as part of school behavior, but it not always seen that way by students. Also in January, the sixth grade will have two assemblies regarding Bullying.

Next month the Blue Team Student Council will decorate the board for the theme of Responsibility. Mrs. Murphy will notify Mrs. Boshart so they can start early.

Next meeting date will be Tues., January 17th, 20123:45 in the Library.
