Aim
To coordinate the delivery of high quality classes and learning activities for homeless and vulnerable adults, including ESOL, Personal Development, Basic Skills, ICT and Arts activities.
The role
The Senior Tutor is responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of accredited and non accredited courses and to monitor attendance, progress, retention and achievement by liaising with specialist tutors. The Senior Tutor will support students through high quality teaching and positive learning experiences and empowering them by building confidence, self esteem and skills. The Senior Tutor is also expected to deliver up to ten hours of teaching a week in their specialism.

CSB is a new and intimate arts, education, employment and training service for homeless and vulnerable adults. Operating in south central Birmingham, CSB will open offering a range of floating services delivering workshops, courses and one-to-one sessions in local community and partner organisations facilities. Over three years, CSB will almost double in size, to include its own Crisis Skylight building and to increase the scale and scope of the workshops, courses and sessions available.
Crisis preferred way of working is to partner with a broad range of organisations from the voluntary, community, statutory and private sectors. Creating these integrated networks offer clients an extended range of supported options to help them build their individual resilience and capabilities, move back into employment, education or training and improve their quality of life.
Dimensions
- The Senior Tutor will manage the tutors and be responsible for maintaining high standards of teaching and learning in CSB.
- The Senior Tutor will deliver up to ten hours of teaching a week in their specialism.
Circumstances
- £26,742 per annum
- The post is 35 hours per week. The post holder will be required on occasion at weekends and evenings to ensure the quality of the teaching is maintained at all times.
- CSB will run four ten week terms per year. Terms breaks will be used for ad-hoc events such as Jobs Fairs, award ceremonies, taster sessions, end of term performances and preparation for the next term.

Principal accountabilities
- Supervising the effective day to day running of classes.
- Leading the team in the design and delivery of quality, interactive programmes.
- Maintaining high standards of teaching and learning at all times by ensuring that lesson plans, schemes of work and student tracking sheets are up to date and in place.
- Co-ordinating and participating in the interview, enrolment and referral process
- Liaising with specialist tutors to prepare and submit an outline course specification before the beginning of each course (where necessary).
- Monitoring tutors records of attendance, absenteeism, retention and achievement.
- Ensuring effective communication between specialist tutors and volunteers via meetings, emails etc.
- Co-ordinating exams across the disciplines.
- Monitoring individual learning plans to address students’ learning needs identified during enrolment, interview, induction, initial assessment and through diagnostic assessment.
- Verifying that learning goals/targets are set up and progress is regularly reviewed.
- Developing, maintaining and sharing appropriate teaching materials and resources.
- Supporting tutors in preparing end of course tests, exams and portfolios.
- Checking that volunteers are assisting tutors professionally in the classroom and that tutors in turn are using their assistance in the same vein.
- Liaising with tutors to plan end of course award ceremonies, trips and invitations.
- Participating proactively in public relations and promotional activities.
- Observing lessons systematically to ensure the delivery of quality teaching.
- Being aware of accreditation routes and to acknowledge the need to respond to national initiatives.
- Undertaking staff development to update existing skills and gain new skills.
- Complying with all the relevant Health and Safety regulations and assist Crisis in the implementation of its own Health and Safety Policy.

Person specification / Essential / Desirable
Qualifications and training
A qualified and experienced teacher in the FE/ACL environment, who has delivered high quality successful learning programmes /
Knowledge and experience
Sound knowledge of best practice and quality standards expected for successful delivery of learning to LSC (SFA) and OFSTED standards. /
Experience of delivering literacy, numeracy, ESOL, Learning Power, Clait or ECDL in an adult education environment. /
Monitoring records of attendance, retention and achievement. /
Understanding and evaluating the success of learning programmes /
Creating and working with lesson plans and individual learning plans /
Supervising and managing teaching staff and/or volunteers. /
Monitoring teaching staff course files. /
Working with vulnerable clients and have an understanding of the issues affecting homeless people /
Trained or willing to train as an internal verifier. /
Knowledge of developing timetables /
Skills and abilities
Able to design and evaluate lesson plans, appropriate to different levels of learning. /
Able to provide and support the continuing professional development of staff, utilising both in-house training and development and external training. /
Excellent interpersonal skills, essential for the supervision and management of staff and able to be appropriately assertive when dealing with any difficult staff issues that might arise. /

Pension
Crisis will contribute a sum equivalent to 5% of your salary into our group personal pension scheme with Scottish Equitable. You will be entitled to join this after three months service with contributions backdated to your start date.
Hours
Full time is 35 hours per week. Employees usually have some flexibility around start and finish time around a core time of 10h00 – 16h00. This depends on operational needs of the department in which employees are working. Some flexibility will be required in order to best meet the needs of clients; some evening / weekend work will be necessary.
Probationary Period
Six months, during which time the contract may be terminated with 1 week’s notice.
Notice
Following the successful completion of the probationary period, the notice period for this post is 1 month
Holidays
25 annual leave days, plus 8 public holidays per annum. Part-time employees are entitled to 25 days pro rata which is based on 2.08 days per month. The holiday year runs from 1 July – 30 June.
Sick pay
In the first six months of service employees are entitled to three working days sick leave. This rises to a maximum of 43 working days after six months.
Season Ticket Loan - A loan to purchase an annual season ticket for travel to and from work may be obtained with agreement of your line manager.
Maternity Leave and Adoption Leave
For employees with one year’s experience at 15 weeks before EWC entitled to 12 weeks full pay and 14 weeks at half pay.
Paternity leave - Up to 20 days paid leave.
