Transportation Update

November 28, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you have heard from Durham Student Transportation Services (DSTS), Unifor 4268, the union representing bus drivers for First Student Ajax and First Student Brooklin, is in a legal strike position.

On Monday, November 27, families were notified that school bus services for routes serviced by First Student Ajax and First Student Brooklin will not be provided during the strike period effective Thursday, November 30, 2017 until further notice.

You are receiving this letter because bus service to our school is affected by the strike. SCHOOLS WILL BE OPEN DURING THE STRIKE and parents and guardians are advised to make alternate transportation arrangements to and from school for children during the strike period.

If your child’s route is serviced by First Student, you would have received a Synrevoice notice.

If your child is absent from school due to the strike, parents and guardians must inform the school through the safe arrivals program, as is the practice with any student absence.

At any time during the strike, if your child is picked up by someone other than a parent and guardian, you must inform the school of this alternate arrangement. All staff, students and parents/guardians are to be aware of the alternate arrangement.

We may experience higher volumes of traffic in the surrounding area and the kiss and ride areas due to an increase in the number of vehicles transporting students to school. Please drive with care and caution as we continue to monitor the situation.

DSTS will continue to monitor First Student and Unifor negotiations. Should there be any updates regarding the strike, parents and guardians will be notified immediately by automated call and letter notification from the school.

We appreciate your cooperation during this time and hope negotiations between First Student and its employees will conclude as quickly as possible. For information and updates regarding the labour action, visit the Durham Student Transportation Services website at

Sincerely,

T.Rayner

Principal
