CONTRACT for FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING with Mrs. Dion:

(Please read through the entire contract. BOTH you and your parent/guardian are required to sign/initial where indicated. Sign BOTH copies and I will sign one copy and return it to you at the beginning of the course.) Website and contact information are in the header on this document.

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

The Fundamentals of Drawing course is designed for students who are seriouslyinterested in more opportunities to draw using a wide variety of materials, techniques and subject matter. Students will strengthen skills in observational drawing, abstraction, various related drawing methods and composition. Motivation and self-discipline are essential. Art criticism, art history, sketchbook and homework assignments are integral parts of the course. There is a final comprehensive drawing project.

All work must be original. If students use someone else’s work or a published image as a basis for their own pieces, there must be significant alteration to the piece for it to be considered original, otherwise it is treated as plagiarism as defined in the student handbook. It is highly recommended that any use of photographic references are based on the artist’s OWN photos and not the photos of others.

REQUIREMENTS:

The student is required to create and present a variety of artworks following the requirements found on the class webpage at (These are all part of your CREATE and PRESENT competencies.) Students will use informed decision-making and problem-solving skills in an ongoing process to develop and create the artwork. Students will experience a variety of concepts and approaches to demonstrate their abilities and versatility with techniques, idea generation, and problem solving. Students are expected to be highly competent in their knowledge of the Elements and Principles of Art.

______I UNDERSTAND THAT I AM REQUIRED TO ALL SUMMATIVE WORKS OF ART DURING THIS HALF-YEAR COURSE. (Student and Parent/Guardian: Initial that you understand this.)

OUTSIDE OF CLASS EXPECTATIONS:

As in any Intermediate-level course, it is expected that students will spend a reasonable amount of time outside the classroom working on completion of assignments. All ideas for projects or solutions to problems should be worked out in a sketchbook both in class and outside of class. The sketchbook is an essential tool in recording ideas, capturing visual information, working on compositional issues, and just fooling around. Sketchbooks are checked EVERY Tuesday. A grade is assigned for the work you complete EVERY WEEK in your sketchbook. (This is part of your CONNECT and CREATE competencies.)

Forty-five minutes, five days a week is NOT enough time for you to fulfill the requirements of the class. Plan to spend a MINIMUM of TWO extra hours PER WEEKoutside of class on your art. The deadlines, for final acceptance of projects, are expected to be met. The deadlines will be on a “rolling basis” and will depend upon the pace of the class.Excuses as to why you cannot meet a deadline will NOT be accepted unless they are due to circumstances beyond your control (family crisis, illness requiring extensive recovery – cold and flu do not count - other issues taken on a case-by-case basis with the teacher). If you work after school, participate in extra-curricular activities, have other commitments, then you have to utilize a schedule that best fits your needs when it comes to time management. Other school deadlines such as the Senior or Junior essay for English are NOT excuses for you to put off your Fundamentals of Drawing requirements. When the deadline is set, work that is handed-in late AUTOMATICALLY drops by one letter grade. Work that is not handed-in on time is not a completed piece of art and therefore cannot earn the highest possible grade for the work that has been created. The highest possible grade you can earn for work turned in late is a “B”. It is YOUR responsibility to stay on top of your work, your schedule and all deadlines. Think of this in terms of a business giving a presentation at a conference. The conference has a specific date. The business cannot show up the day after the scheduled conference and expect to give their presentation.

______I UNDERSTAND THE STRONG COMMITMENT TO THE DEADLINE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS CLASS AND THAT THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE GRADE MY WORK CAN RECEIVE FOR WORK BEING HANDED-IN LATE IS A “B”.(Student and Parent/Guardian: Initial that you understand this.)

By signing this contract I understand ALL requirements for Fundamentals of Drawing. I understand this is a semester-long commitment. I understand the expected work level for an intermediate level art class and I will do my best work in this class.
