Applications are invited for the post of Established Chair of Data Analytics / Personal Professor of Informatics (Data Analytics) in the College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway and attached to the Insight Research Institute. The successful candidate will provide dynamic research leadership in the area of data analytics, show a strong commitment to teaching and provide wider academic leadership within the College and Insight Research Institute.

The National University of Ireland, Galway, College of Engineering and Informatics, invites applications for the position of Established Chair or Personal Professor (depending on suitability) associated with the Insight Research Institute at NUI Galway (previously known as the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI)). The Professorship is intended to strengthen the strategic research areas of Insight at NUI Galway. The Insight Centre for Data Analytics is Ireland’s Premier Data Analytics research centre, primarily located at NUI Galway, UCD, DCU and UCC with partner sites at the Royal Irish Academy, Tyndall, TCD and NUI Maynooth.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform a leading role in NUI Galway’s Insight Research Institute and will lead a team of post-doctoral and postgraduate researchers. S/he will act as the principal scientific investigator on a number of key Insight projects and will provide leadership and research supervision to the members of his/her research group.

The successful candidate shall possess:

·  An international profile and expertise in the Linked Data, Semantic Web and Web Science Research

·  An international reputation with a capacity to provide leadership in the development of areas overlapping with the Semantic Web and Linked Data, such as but not restricted to, Knowledge Discovery, Visualisation, Natural Language Processing, Data Science, Data Analytics, Bioinformatics, or related fields and application areas.

·  A clear strategy and vision for the realisation of world-class research.

·  An excellent record of research as evidenced by publications in top ranking journals and conferences.

·  Proven ability to compete successfully for national and international research funding particularly in the EU Framework programmes.

·  Proven ability to lead a team of researchers and to supervise PhD students.

·  Lecturing experience at University level.

·  Demonstrated experience in working with industry and strong commitment to future industrial engagements.

·  Demonstrated leadership experience at the top managerial/directorship level of research organisations or academic institutions (essential for the appointment at Established Chair level).

·  Demonstrated participation as an influential contributor to activities carried out by bodies such as standardisation organisations, funding agencies and other governmental / non-governmental organisations (essential for the appointment at Established Chair level).

The appointment will be made at the level of established professor or personal professor, depending on the experience of the successful applicant. The appointment will be made within the provisions of the Employment Control Framework.

Salary:

Appointments at Personal level

€121,765.60 p.a.

(This appointment will be made in line with current Government pay policy)

Appointments at Established level

€106,515 to €136,275

(This appointment will be made on the Established Professor scale in line with current Government pay policy)

(For pre 1995 public sector entrants in Ireland, the D class Salary rates will apply)

BACKGROUND

Insight at NUI Galway is focused on Semantic Web and Linked Data Research and is one of the largest groups in the world focusing in these areas with over 120 people and more than €60M in research funding in the last 10 years. Insight at NUI Galway is dedicated to research aimed at enabling and exploiting Networked Knowledge using Linked Data and Semantic Web technologies. It is part of the Insight Centre for Data Analytics which was established in 2013 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland.

The research strategy of Insight at NUI Galway reflects and supports the research priorities of NUI Galway - in particular the Informatics, Physical and Computational Sciences priority. There is a strong interdisciplinary emphasis on Insight research where collaborations and research alliances both within the University and with regional, national and international partners are strongly encouraged.

Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

The post-holder duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Teaching

To give instruction and supervision, as directed by the Head of School, to students of the University in courses and programmes organised by the School or to which the School contributes to another School or College. Such duties to include curriculum and course design, preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, project supervision and general examination and other assessment responsibilities. The post-holder is also required to be available to students for academic counselling and advice. In some disciplines, academic activities may also include laboratory, workshop or clinical instruction, supervision of fieldwork, site visits and other off-campus activities.

• The post-holder will show a strong commitment to teaching.

• Such duties to include curriculum and course design, preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, project supervision and general examination and other assessment responsibilities.

• The post-holder is also required to be available to students for academic counselling and advice.

• The successful candidate is expected to act as thesis adviser of PhD students and master students and shape the Universities teaching expertise.

• To oversee the development of, and to participate in, delivering teaching programmes which engage and inspire students at all levels and ensures a strong focus on quality teaching and on the continuous review and development of teaching skills and methodologies in the discipline.

Research

To engage in research and other creative and innovative activity as appropriate to the discipline. The post-holder is required to disseminate their research in academic publications, other outlets as appropriate and to participate in postgraduate supervision. The post-holder is encouraged to engage in initiatives to seek research funding, as appropriate. The post-holder is also encouraged to promote and engage in the development of collaborative research.

• To engage in research and other creative and innovative activity as required by Insight and appropriate to the discipline.

• The post-holder is required to disseminate their research in academic publications, other outlets as appropriate and to participate in postgraduate supervision.

• The post-holder has to actively engage in and contribute to initiatives to seek research funding and industrial funding, as appropriate.

• The post-holder is also encouraged to promote and engage in the development of collaborative research.

• As a leader in their field the Professor contributes to the direction and development of informatics research at NUI Galway (particularly in the areas of Linked Data and Semantic Web) through planning and leading research of outstanding quality. S/he leads others to make the most effective contribution to their discipline and encourages cross discipline research collaboration.

Contribution and Scholarly Activity

To participate in academic administration at School, College and University levels as part of their contribution to the University. To engage with the wider community - regionally, nationally and internationally - from a civic, economic, social and cultural perspective as a contribution to the life of the University. In representing the University externally, the post-holder is expected to maintain the highest professional standards, thereby enhancing the reputation of the University. The post-holder is expected to engage in scholarly activity such as, but not limited to, refereeing of journals, membership of discipline related advisory bodies and peer review panels and work associated with external examinership.

• The post holder shall be a member of the College of Engineering and Informatics and will be expected to contribute actively to the academic administration and the on-going initiatives within the College through participation at College meetings and other relevant committees.

• The post holder will also contribute to the established outreach program of Insight including primary, post-primary and third levels as well as to the local communities.

• To engage with the wider community regionally, nationally and internationally from a civic, economic, social and cultural perspective as a contribution to the life of the University.

• In representing the University externally, the post-holder is expected to maintain the highest professional standards, thereby enhancing the reputation of the University (and Insight).

• The post-holder is expected to engage in scholarly activity such as, but not limited to, refereeing of journals, membership of discipline related advisory bodies and peer review panels and work associated with external examinership.

• The post holder will actively support the technology transfer into the community and businesses.

The post-holder shall carry out these duties under the direction of the Head of the School or of an authorised senior member of the staff of the School.

The post-holder shall be a member of College/Colleges in accordance with University Statutes.

The post-holder will have the capacity and willingness to act as Director of Centre / Institute or Head of School.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Essential Requirements:

●  Normally, a PhD in Computer Science or relevant discipline.

●  An international profile and expertise in Linked Data, Semantic Web and Web Science Research

●  An international reputation with a capacity to provide leadership in the development of areas overlapping with the Semantic Web and Linked Data, such as but not restricted to, Knowledge Discovery, Visualisation, Natural Language Processing, Data Science, Bioinformatics, or related fields and application areas.

●  Teaching experience at undergraduate or post graduate level

●  An excellent record of research as evidenced by publications in top ranking journals and conferences.

●  An ability and track record to compete successfully for external national and international research funding.

●  Demonstrated experience in working with industry and strong commitment to future industrial engagements

●  Good interpersonal communication skills to work as a member of the Insight at NUI Galway leadership team in a collegial way.

●  Strong connections in the international scientific community (e.g., demonstrated by chairing and participating in the programme committees of high-level scientific conferences.)

●  A clear vision and strategy for the realization of world-class research

●  Demonstrable experience in leading and managing large research groups

●  Leadership experience at the top managerial/directorship level of research organisations or academic institutions (applicable to Established Chair post only).

●  Demonstrated participation as an influential contributor to activities carried out by bodies such as standardisation organisations, funding agencies and other governmental / non-governmental organisations. (applicable to Established Chair post only).

Desirable Requirements:

●  Experience of participation on Scientific Boards and Steering committees for research organisations.

●  Have experience in the definition and execution of administrative processes for large research organisations

●  Have a demonstrated record of representing a large research organisation to funding agencies, Governmental representatives, project partners and consortia.

The appointment will be made to the School of Engineering and Informatics, but will be associated with the Insight Research Institute Galway
