Course Description

This class emphasizes the use of aerobic activities, to enhance the students overall level of physical fitness. Throughout the course students will be exposed to a variety of aerobic activities and will explore how nutrition plays a role in overall well-being. Students will also analyze their own level of fitness and dietary needs for the lifestyle they lead.

Course Standards:

Students will understand that:

·  Leisure/recreational or competitive physical activities provide opportunities for self-expression, social interactions and can be enjoyable and challenging

·  Regular participation in health-enhancing and personally rewarding physical activities has physical, emotional/mental and social benefits

·  An individual needs a personal plan for achieving and maintaining fitness goals

·  Nutritional choices affect an individuals physical, mental, emotional and social well being

·  Nutrients have a role in the development of an individuals health

Students will:

·  Recognize physical activity as an opportunity for positive social and group interaction

·  Design and implement a personal lifetime leisure/recreational plan that includes challenging and enjoyable physical activities

·  Evaluate the personal benefits derives from regular participation in leisure/recreational or competitive physical activities as it relates to the quality and quantity of life

·  Participate in regular physical activity

·  Evaluate how an individuals behaviors and choices of diet, exercise and rest affect the body

·  Analyze and evaluate the positive and negative impact of food selections on maintaining and promoting health

Safe

1.  Use all equipment appropriately as it is intended to be used. If you are not sure how to use equipment ask your teacher to demonstrate proper technique to prevent possible injury to yourself or other students and possible damage to equipment.

2.  Examples of unsafe and inappropriate behavior: climbing on bleachers to get equipment, hanging on basketball rims, horseplay

Grading:

Diet and physical activity analysis

Daily grade for being prepared with appropriate clothing shoes and materials (5pts)

Daily grade for effort and participation in fitness activities (10pts)

Beginning of class procedures

·  Students must be in the health hallway by the time the tardy bell rings, late students will be sent to get a tardy slip.

·  Students will have 5 minutes to change clothing and store belongings in locker room and will then meet in the locker room hallway.

·  During this time the classroom teacher will be stationed in the locker room hallway to address any questions or needs students may have.

·  5 minutes after the tardy bell your teacher will lock the locker room doors and classes will report to their designated area with their teacher.

During Class

·  Assigned teacher will supervise students at all times.

·  Any student that leaves the assigned area without permission will receive disciplinary actions for skipping class.

·  Locker rooms will remain locked during class, if a student must use the restroom they will be sent to the concession area.

·  If a student is summoned to the office they will go as they are and return at the end of class to get belongings unless another faculty member can escort them to the locker room to get belongings.

End of class procedures

·  Students will remain in the gym until all equipment is collected and stored. At this time the teacher will exit the gym with students to open locker rooms. Students will have 5-7 minutes to change clothing and collect belongings and report back to the locker room hallway where they will remain until the bell rings to dismiss class.

·  During this time the classroom teacher will be stationed in the locker room hallway to address any questions or needs students may have.

·  All students will exit the Physical education area using the health classroom hallway, no one will be permitted to exit through the gym or track

Assignments:

·  Homework assignments will be written on the board and should be recorded in agenda books

After an Absence:

·  It is the students’ responsibility to complete the classroom or fitness assignment and absence log if the absence was excused. Work to be completed based on the number of days absent.

·  All unexcused absences resulting in missing assignments will be recorded as a zero.

·  Students are responsible for getting notes from another student for information covered on the day of their absence.

Late or Missing Assignments:

·  Students may turn in assignments 1 day late for a 10% penalty.

·  Late assignments will be accepted for partial credit until end each quarter

Computer Lab

·  Students must adhere to computer lab rules and procedures, in addition to rules given in the classroom.

Discipline:

1st offense – warning/student teacher conference/student may be removed from activity

2nd offense – student removed from activity/contact parents and after school teacher detention

3rd offense – student removed from activity for the remainder of the class and the following class /discipline referral.

Locker Information:

Students may be assigned a locker with the rental of a CCHS lock (cost $5) to use during their Physical Education Course. At the end of the school year the locks may be returned if they are in good working condition for a refund. Each student is responsible for making sure that their belongings are securely locked in their locker during class to prevent possible theft. If your locker or lock is not working properly it is your responsibility to notify your teacher so another locker or lock can be assigned. CCHS is not responsible for any personal items lost or stolen.
