New Cooperative Garden in Front

You may have noticed that there are some raised garden beds outside the building now, having been constructed and planted with edibles by Urban Seedlings for Westmount Park United Church. It’s part of their Faith in Nature community-building initiative. They are to be cooperative/shared gardens, and there may be a few spaces left if you contact Mary at the Contactivity office or Rev Whitehouse at e hasten to add that there are certain commitments one has to make to take part in the pilot project. One has to tend the garden weekly, stay in touch with the church gardener Val and with each other, watch a shortweekly video of instructions by Urban Seedlings and abide by a few other common sense rules. There is an agreement to sign. And there is no private area so you can’t plant extra things without a consensus from the other gardeners in the same bed. A given garden bed will be shared communallyby 4 or so people, as will the produce. That being said, the project is a great opportunity to see something wonderful (and edible) grow with a bit of TLC from you. It’s a great way to meet a community of other gentle souls who want to be part of something wholesome in the growing season. And the fact that the beds are raised makes it easier on the back too! Space is definitely limited, so let us know if you are interested and we will start a wait list.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

For the past couple of years, we have collaborated with a seniors group called R.E.C.A.A. to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This year is no exception. RECAA has come up with a bit of a new approach and they are issuing an open invitation to Contactivity members to take part. The idea is to hold an event which underscores the need for respect for elders. It's called "Elders make Waves towards an Age-Friendly City". There will be music, movement and visual effects. Expect banners, a few dance steps and who-knows-what-all. There will be an optional rehearsal on June 7th in preparation for a June 9th event. Just come on June 7th to 1590 Dr. Penfield (corner of Dr. Penfield and Cote des Neiges at 10 AM.) The rehearsal will be from 10-12 followed by a free lunch or you can come for lunch and the afternoon rehearsal as well. You could come for the morning or the afternoon, or just for an hour or so at any point. If you recall the RECAA artsy seniors, they are super welcoming and open.

Then on June 9th, this time at 11 AM, some of us will be meeting up with them not far from Union United Church (which itself is at 3007 Delisle St). To be precise, for the real event on the day itself we will meet at the Lionel Groulx metro station which is right nearby. You can even come to that event without having been at the rehearsal - just join in the fun and "fake it"! Contactivity may even have a booth at the event. If you have any questions about this little adventure, call Mary or Fiona at the Contactivity office.
