Course Content:

Develop manufacturing skills required to become a machinist or related career option in manufacturing. Advanced machining projects will be planned, machined, inspected and assembled. A strong emphasis on quality work, good planning, safety, and inspections processes are stressed. The majority of the grade is determined from the project competency completion, and limiting of scrap.

Course learning outcomes: Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

·  Demonstrate considerable setup, machining and inspection knowledge and skill

·  Demonstrate the ability to hold tolerances and make parts foe assemblies.

·  Perform process planning to a high level of capabilities.

·  Apply safe work practices.

·  Demonstrate a knowledge of material properties, coat and machining characteristics of various materials, mild steel, aluminum, tool steel, alloy steel.

·  Complete an advanced machining project assembly to specifications, with limited or no scrap within the time provided.

·  Demonstrate and initiate proper cleanup.

Learning activities: This course will include lectures, quizzes, tests, demonstrations and machine shop projects.

Assessment tasks: A student’s progress will be evaluated as follows:

·  Project completion 55%

·  Daily Journal, Class participation, homework and Attendance, quizzes 20%

·  Midterm Exam 10%

·  Final Exam 15%

Lab and lecture attendance is mandatory. Final grades will be affected by unexcused absences, tardies, and leaving without permission.

Concepts:

Skills for successful employment are key concepts of this course.

Issues:

Safety in the industrial environment is a primary focus of this course. Students are encouraged to ask, “how can this machine hurt me.”

Skills:

Upon successful completion of this course students will understand how to:

·  Safely operate and set-up mills, lathes, band saws and bench grinders.

·  Calculate the correct cutting speed for a variety of materials.

·  Use measuring tools including a ruler, micrometer and caliper.

·  Apply tolerances as specified.

·  Achieve a good sliding fit between two parts of an assembly.

·  Use precision lay-out skills.

·  Plan the order of operations for a machine shop project.
