CONDUCTORS AND CABLES

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

PART 1. GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

1.1.1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

1.2.1. This Section includes building wires and cables and associated connectors, splices, and terminations for wiring systems rated 600V and less.

1.2.2. Related Sections include the following:

1.2.2.1.   Division16 Section "Voice and Data Communication Cabling" for transmission media used for control and signal circuits.

1.2.2.2.   Division16 Section "Medium-Voltage Cables" for single-conductor and multiconductor cables, cable splices, and terminations for electrical distribution systems with 2001 to 35,000V.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

1.3.1. Product Data: For each type of product indicated.

Coordinate paragraph below with qualification requirements in Division1 Section "Quality Requirements" and as supplemented in "Quality Assurance" Article.

Delete below if Contractor is not required, in Part3 "Field Quality Control" Article, to provide or perform field quality-control testing.

1.3.2. Field Quality-Control Test Reports: From Contractor.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

1.4.1. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, Article100, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked for intended use.

1.4.2. Comply with NFPA70.

PART 2. PRODUCTS É

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

PART 3. EXECUTION

3.1 CONDUCTOR AND INSULATION APPLICATIONS

This Article provides examples of application requirements for conductors and cables. Edit to select wiring methods for the various environments in Project. Add other methods if required. Revise conductor insulation and cable type designations to suit Project condition, local code, and practice. Refer to NFPA70 and to UL's "Electrical Construction Equipment Directory 1998" for additional application information about conductor sizes, insulation temperature ratings in cables, and product-use classifications and restrictions.

3.1.1. Service Entrance: Type THHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway, or XHHW, single conductors in raceway .

3.1.2. Exposed Feeders: TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway

3.1.3. Feeders Concealed in Ceilings, Walls, and Partitions: TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway.

3.1.4. Feeders Concealed in Concrete, below Slabs-on-Grade, and in Crawlspaces: TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway.

3.1.5. Exposed Branch Circuits: In Crawlspaces and Casework - TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway. In shelving - Metal-clad multi-conductor cable, TypeMC. In cable trays, power poles and raceways - Power and Control Tray Cable, Type TC, or Metal-clad multi-conductor cable, TypeMC.

3.1.6. Branch Circuits Concealed in Ceilings, Walls, and Partitions: TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway.

3.1.7. Branch Circuits Concealed in Concrete and below Slabs-on-Grade: TypeTHHN-THWN, single conductors in raceway.

3.1.8. Cord Drops and Portable Appliance Connections: TypeSO, hard service cord.

3.1.9. Fire Alarm Circuits: TypeTHHN-THWN, in raceway; Power-limited, fire-protective, signaling circuit cable, in raceway. .

3.1.10. Class1 Control Circuits: TypeTHHN-THWN, in raceway.

3.1.11. Class2 Control Circuits: TypeTHHN-THWN, in raceway; Power-limited cable, concealed in building finishes; Power-limited tray cable, in cable tray.

3.1.12. Unless otherwise noted, conductor sizes given on the drawings are for Type THWN (75°C) copper conductors, not more than 3 conductors in a raceway, in ambient temperature not exceeding 30°C. If other insulation types or conditions are proposed, conductor size shall be adjusted in accordance with requirements of the N.E.C. at no increase of cost to the Government; however size shall not be decreased without written approval of the Contracting Officer on advice of the engineer.

3.2 INSTALLATION

3.2.1. Conceal cables in finished walls, ceilings, and floors, unless otherwise indicated.

3.2.2. Use manufacturer-approved pulling compound or lubricant where necessary; compound used must not deteriorate conductor or insulation. Do not exceed manufacturer's recommended maximum pulling tensions and sidewall pressure values.

3.2.3. Use pulling means, including fish tape, cable, rope, and basket-weave wire/cable grips, that will not damage cables or raceway.

3.2.4. Install exposed cables parallel and perpendicular to surfaces of exposed structural members, and follow surface contours where possible.

3.2.5. Support cables according to Division16 Section "Basic Electrical Materials and Methods."

3.2.6. Seal around cables penetrating fire-rated elements according to Division7 Section "Through-Penetration Firestop Systems."

3.2.7. Identify and color-code conductors and cables according to Division16 Section “Electrical Identification."

3.3 CONNECTIONS

3.3.1. Tighten electrical connectors and terminals according to manufacturer's published torque-tightening values. If manufacturer's torque values are not indicated, use those specified in UL486A and UL486B.

3.3.2. Make splices and taps that are compatible with conductor material and that possess equivalent or better mechanical strength and insulation ratings than unspliced conductors.

3.3.3. Wiring at Outlets: Install conductor at each outlet, with at least 6 inches of slack.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Referenced sections in NETAATS include inspection procedures to verify physical condition. They also include tests and measurements of insulation resistance of installed conductors.

3.4.1. Testing: Perform the following field quality-control testing:

Retain subparagraphs below with any paragraph selected above. Edit to suit Project.

3.4.1.1.   After installing conductors and cables and before electrical circuitry has been energized, test for compliance with requirements.

3.4.1.2.   Perform each electrical test and visual and mechanical inspection stated in NETAATS, Section7.3.1. Certify compliance with test parameters.

3.4.2. Test Reports: Prepare a written report to record the following:

3.4.2.1.   Test procedures used.

3.4.2.2.   Test results that comply with requirements.

3.4.2.3.   Test results that do not comply with requirements and corrective action taken to achieve compliance with requirements.
