True Mobility meets High Speed and Performance

AOS and Tellitec deliver the next version of SkyPipe™ offering VPN secured and PEP accelerated IP services over satellite networks.

Dallas/Sint-Niklaas April 12, 2006– In step with the debut of Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) satellite service, AOS, Inc. is launching its new SkyPipe™ Link Enhancement for Secure Satellite (LESS) Hardware Client. The palm-size, mobile solution features an integrated TCP acceleration and HTTP prefetching technology, which was derived from the well known TelliNet Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) product line and jointly optimized by AOS and Tellitec for BGAN use.

The problems with sending Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic over long-delay and high-bit error links – such as satellite links – are the result of a congestion control scheme that was designed for terrestrial networks. TCP requires that the destination host provide regular acknowledgements to the source to indicate that an error-free packet has successfully arrived. If the source does not receive an acknowledgement within a certain period of time of sending a packet, TCP will assume network congestion, and will decrease data throughput.

In 2003, AOS introduced SkyPipe, an RFC 3135 based software application optimized for TCP traffic over secure satellite links as part of the AOS the Outpost Communicator™ (OC) 256 system, developed in partnership with Tellitec Communications bvba, a Belgium based provider of leading-edge software for satellite, cable and wireless services. Tellitec’s TelliNet distributed PEPtechnology is an integral part of the SkyPipe platform. The SkyPipe PEP consists of a server and a client component with the high latency broadband link in between. While the SkyPipe Server is located at the teleport, or headquarter of the service provider, end consumers can purchase an easy-to-install palm-size SkyPipe Hardware Client to access the service. There is no need for the end user to install software or configure web browsers or other applications to use the SkyPipe PEP. Traffic between the SkyPipe Server and the Hardware Client is optimized for high latency networks, and even includes HTTP prefetching to allow download speeds for web surfing equaling terrestrial DSL.

Tellitec has become a very valued partner for us” says AOS Chief Operations Officer Alan Then. “They offer an extraordinary technical depth and a collaborative approach in a working relationship that is unsurpassed”.

In addition to the highly effective PEP resolving TCP and HTTP delay issues inherent to high-delay satellite links, the SkyPipe™ Client provides RFC 1951 based compression and high performance firewall and VPN functionality for secure communication via satellite links and wireless public networks. This makes it ideal for delivering economically feasible TCP/IP based services such as Internet access with a transmission performance comparable to terrestrial broadband connections – as well as a high level of security. And as power is supplied via the USB interface, the SkyPipe Client device does not require a separate power supply, making it an optimal solution for both static local networks and mobile notebook applications.

Creating new successful products requires an in depth understanding of the customer’s needs” says Tellitec Chief Marketing Officer Christian Zanoth. “AOS has a renowned expertise in the Inmarsat business and due to our close relationship, Inmarsat users can benefit from the mostly unique solution in the field of mobile TCP/IP acceleration and security”.
