FOURTH GRADE CURRICULUM

In Language Arts:

Students understand the basic features of reading; read grade-level appropriate materials; and draw upon a wide variety of comprehension strategies, striving to understand what has been read. Students read and respond to a variety of significant works of children’s literature. Students write clear, coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea, then write compositions that describe and explain familiar objects, events, and experiences. Students write and speak with a command of standard English rules. Students listen and respond to oral communications and deliver brief oral presentations.

In Mathematics:

Students deepen their understanding of place value by understanding large numbers. Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide large numbers. Students describe and compare simple fractions and decimals. Students understand the properties of, and the relationships between plane geometric figures. Students collect, represent, and analyze data to answer questions. Students use tools to solve problems.

EXPLANATION OF PROFICIENCY LEVELS

Advanced (5): Indicates the student is regularly meeting and exceeding the grade-level Standard, grasping and applying key concepts, and completing work with exceptional quality.

Proficient (4): Indicates the student is regularly meeting the grade-level Standard, grasping and applying key concepts, and completing work with limited errors.

Basic (3): Indicates the student is beginning to meet the Standard and is showing progress toward grasping and applying the key grade level concepts.

Below Basic (2): Indicates the student is not meeting the grade-level Standard and additional practice is needed.

Far Below Basic (1): Indicates the student is not meeting the grade-level Standard and is working below grade level expectations.

Not Taught ( ): Indicates this Standard, to date, has not been taught.

Proficiency levels: Determined from a variety of standards-based assessments andstudent work.

Markings for Social Skills, and Work Habits

Always (A): Indicates the student is responsible for his/her behavior.

Often (O): Indicates the student is responsible for his/her behavior most of the time.

Seldom (S): Indicates the student is not responsible for his/her behavior.
