  1. Position overview

The Senior Lecturer in Applied Social Sciences manages and leads the Applied Social Sciences and Creative Indigenous Writing programs delivered by Batchelor Institute under the umbrella of ACIKE. The Senior Lecturer leads a team of lecturers who are team teaching with their CDU colleagues and takes a leadership role both regionally and within the Division. The position has opportunity to contribute to and/or lead research projects and engage in scholarship in the field of Indigenous Knowledges – one the Institute’s key research concentrations – and will support research capacity building of the Applied Social Sciences team. This position requires significant experience in the field of Applied Social Sciences as well as qualifications at a Masters level at least but preferably at PhD level.

  1. Detailed statement of duties

1. Provide academic leadership and manage the operations of the Applied Social Sciences and Creative Writing unit, including supervision of staff, monitoring of budgets and other resources

2. Work collaboratively with CDU Indigenous Knowledges leadership to ensure a strong, team teaching approach is undertaken.

3. Participate in relevant Batchelor Institute and CDU School meetings.

4. Work with ACIKE teams at both CDU and Batchelor Institute in curriculum development, delivery and assessment with the Applied Social Sciences and Creative Writing programs.

5. Undertake research and scholarship activities and supervise Higher Degree by Research candidates where appropriate;

6. Maintain personal professional development through activities such as course development and consultancy in Indigenous education/discipline-related areas.

7. Implement and maintain Institute administrative and academic policies

8. Undertake a leadership role with the School and Division.

9. Liaise with employers, professional bodies, other higher education institutions, government bodies and the wider community to maintain Batchelor Institute’s participation in the professional area.

10. Other duties as required under the direction of the Head of School.

  1. Essential selection criteria

1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to at least five (5) years of Higher Education experience in the social sciences or related field, including graduate qualifications to PhD or Master’s level and substantial experience relevant to the position.

2. Knowledge and experience in one or more research areas of Indigenous policy and practice, land and sea management practice, community advocacy and creative writing or related field.

3. Significant experience as an educational leader, preferably within Indigenous Australian communities and/or organisations.

4. Demonstrated knowledge of historical and contemporary issues of importance to Indigenous Australians relevant to education.

5. Proven capacity to work effectively with others in culturally diverse teams, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision.

6. Demonstrated capacity to initiate and develop curriculum and online teaching and learning resources relevant to the courses associated with this position.

7. Experience in online teaching and a high degree of competence in the use of personal computers and electronic communications technology.

8. An emerging research profile of publications/research projects and a demonstrated capacity to lead and/or support research and scholarship in the field of applied social sciences.

9. Capacity to work within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian communities and organisations, and an ability to empathise and communicate freely with students.

10. Must be prepared to stay in the range of accommodation available to Institute staff on remote communities, including camping out.

1. A completed PhD qualification

2. A record of successful supervision of Higher Degree by Research Candidates.

3. A track record in securing research and/or project grant income.
