J. of Aerospace Engineering Special Collection on

“Damage Detection, Assessment, and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures”

Due to the harsh environmental loads (e.g. traffic, wind, seismic, scour, or thermal effects), deterioration and degradation of infrastructures are always of great concerns worldwide. A major part of the current infrastructures are either structurally deficientor functionally obsolete.These deficient structures can potentially endanger the safety and economical use, and even develop into a structure failure if the damage is not detected in the early stage.The research on detecting damage at the earliest possible stage is universal throughout the fields of civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. The common damage detection methods include visual inspection, localnon-destructive detection methods such as ultrasound, X-ray, dye penetrates, magnetic particle, acoustic emission, etc., and global detection methods such as vibration-based damage detection, statistical detection methods, etc.

In the assessment of existing structures, engineers are not only increasingly faced with the challenges of early detection of damage, but also the evaluation of structure performance and behavior under damage, and economical and efficientretrofitting of the damaged components commonly found in older structures.In order to maintain the safety and integrity of structures, research on the damage mechanism, assessment of structure performance in damaged status, and the innovative technologies and materials to rehabilitate, repair, and retrofit structures are of great significance and have become pervasive research topics.

The main focus of this special collectionis to present the recent advances in damage detection, health monitoring, structure condition assessment, and the innovative applications in repair, retrofitting, and rehabilitation of structures.A broad range of potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Damage Detection and NDT&E
  • Structure Health Monitoring and Sensing Technology
  • Mechanism, Simulation, and Prediction of Damage
  • Damage Uncertainty Quantification and ReliabilityEstimation,
  • Structure Performance under Dynamic/Environmental/Service Loadings

  • Repair, Retrofitting, and Rehabilitation of Structures
  • Damage-based Life Prediction, Structural Sustainability, and Life-cycle Assessment
  • Innovative Material and Technology for Structure Repair
