PUBLIC FORUM

Thank you to all who attended our public forum on development in November. Many residents attended and shared their ideas and concerns about the future direction of development in our community. The planning board will be studying options, such as incentive zoning, to create a tool for open communication and negotiation with developers interested in bringing their businesses here. There will be public hearings to share information and receive input from the community.

FIRE HYDRANTS

Please adopt a hydrant to save time in an emergency. It only takes a few minutes to locate a hydrant near your home and shovel it clean of snow.

PARKING

There is NO parking on village streets from 2 AM to 6 AM year round. This time of the year it is important to comply so snow plows can properly clean the streets. The Sheriffs Department has been asked to enforce this overnight parking regulation.

SNOWMOBILES

There are state laws that regulate the use of snowmobiles on the road. There is a village law that prohibits snowmobiles and ATV's from operation on village sidewalks.

TAX CAP INFORMATION

Like most other municipalities, the Village of Bloomfield has adopted a local law to allow the village to levy a tax in excess of the 1.66% cap, if needed. The Board of Trustees will make every effort to levy a tax of no more than 1.66% provided all of the state mandates can be met and still continue to provide essential services.

WELCOME NEW FITNESS CENTER

With the new year often come resolutions to be healthier. Dave Conklin is making this a little easier for you to act upon. Please welcome Bloomfield Village Fitness as a new business in our community. It is located at 18 Main St. and will be open sometime in February so watch Main St. signage for more information.

2014/15 BUDGET PREPARATION

February is the month when village officials will begin review of a draft village budget. If you have any suggestions please contact the Village Office.

The Office of the State Comptroller has developed a website to help citizens understand government budgets and to actually track spending of local governments. If you go to www.yourmoneynewyork.com you can access many resources and information such as: a guide to understanding local budgets, learn about college savings plans, you can see if you are entitled to any unclaimed funds held by NY State, and see how the Village of Bloomfield has spent your money and raised revenues for the past six years.

HOLIDAY CHEER

Please extend a special THANK YOU to the Bloomfield Garden Club and the Gardening Angels for decorating the village this holiday season. If you would be interested in joining either one of these groups, contact the village and we will refer you to a member. Kudos goes to our village DPW for their assistance with removing the flower carts and hanging the wreaths and holiday banners.

RECYCLE

Christmas trees can be taken to the WWTP for recycling during normal business hours Monday through Thursday. The location is well marked.

SNOW REMOVAL

The village plows the sidewalks daily Monday through Friday. They are plowed on the weekend as needed. Please make an effort to keep the walk clean after you plow your driveway. Please do NOT allow driveway snow to be plowed across highways. This practice is illegal, creating a hazard on the highway and can also cause property damage to a neighbor.

CARBON MONOXIDE SAFETY TIPS

As we are in the heating season, please be especially aware of the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning. The following are offered as safety tips:

1.  Have chimneys, vents and heating equipment inspected

2.  Never use portable generators inside your home or garage, even with windows and doors open

3.  Never use a gas range for heat

4.  Always open the damper before lighting a fire in the fireplace

5.  Install CO detectors and check the batteries regularly

6.  Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath and with extreme exposure: vomiting, mental confusion, loss of muscle control, loss of consciousness.

NEW PLANNING BOARD MEMBER

The Village Board and Planning Board are very pleased to welcome Gail Harrington as our new member to the Planning Board. We thank Bob Dobberstein for his service as he leaves the board.

An alternate member is still needed. Please contact the Village Office if you are interested.

WATER METERS

Did you know that your sewer charges are affected by how much water you use? If you water your yard or garden a lot, you may want to have an extra (X) meter installed to track the water you use for gardens, pools, car washing, etc., that does not actually go into the sewer system. With an extra meter, we can deduct that water consumption from your total water used before we calculate your sewer units. This might save you money. If you only water occasionally and do not want the added expense of an extra meter, you should read the water meter before and after outside use, and call the readings in to the village office at 657-7554 and it will be tracked for you.

FIRE HOUSE MEETING ROOM

The new firehouse is a valuable community asset which belongs to the taxpayers of the town of East Bloomfield. It is of course the headquarters for our outstanding volunteer fire department, and contains a truck garage and all the necessary support facilities for fire department operation. One feature is a large meeting room and a full commercial kitchen.

When the meeting room and kitchen are not needed by the fire department, they can be made available to any resident of the town of East Bloomfield for community events, family gatherings, etc. There is no charge except for a returnable deposit (plus a charge if the stove is used).

If you would like further information, contact Jack Herrington, Commissioner for the Fire District. 585-657-6740 or
