JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: ENGINE CREWPERSON
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Engine Crewpersonis an entry level, seasonalposition working as part of a three person wildland fire suppression engine crew. This position is under the supervision of an Engine Foreman.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
SAFETY: Works in a safe manner at all times. Participates actively in the Association Safety program to meet or exceed established safety goals.
WILDLANDFIRE: Participates as a member of a crew/engine or in conjunction with heavy equipment in wildland fire suppression operations as assigned. Operates wildland firefighting equipment and vehicles after receiving proper training and reports maintenance needs to the Association Mechanic. Locates fires using maps, Global Positioning System (GPS), and compass. Participates in wildland fire suppression, pre-suppression, prevention and safety activities. Constructs fireline, assists with ignition and/orholding operations, and participates in mop-up duties as directed. Assists with supplying and servicing fire engines and equipment to assure daily fire readiness.
FACILITY MAINTENANCE: Works for the Engine Foreman on maintenance of the buildings and grounds. Assistswith keeping warehousescleaned, stocked and arranged neatly. Assists with maintenance and supply of Fire Lookouts when time permits.
MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES: Attends and successfully completes wildland fire training. Assistswith vehicle inspections, maintenance, and repair work as requested. Assists the Association Mechanic as requested. May help with thinning, piling and prescribed burning of slash and other projects as directed. Completes all required reports as directed by the Engine Foreman.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
This position requires:
- Must be 18 years of age or olderatthe time of hire.
- The possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and a determination of insurability by the Association’s motor vehicle insurance providerthroughout the duration of employment.AnIdaho driving record check will be conducted to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record. If the driver’s license is from outside Idaho, a no less than three year driving history must be provided at the time of interview.
- The ability to take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the Arduous level as a condition of hire.
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision.
- Ability to follow directions in high stress, fast paced emergency situations.
- Maintenance of physical fitness to perform assigned duties.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Must be capable of successfully completing required training to qualify as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).
- Must be able to learn how to use tools and equipment used in wildland firefighting including: mobile and handheld radios, GPS, chainsaws, portable pumps, four wheel drive vehicles, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner, including reporting to work for scheduled shift with all personal protective equipment (PPE). The Association provides the required PPE with the exception of 8-inch high, lace-type leather work boots with non-slip, Vibram-type, melt-resistant soles. The 8-inch height requirement is measured from the bottom of the heel to the top of the boot. A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record must be maintained for continued employment. Required to drive wildland fire engines obeying all traffic laws and drive on steep narrow forest roads. Required to work various shifts including holidays, nights, weekends, and long hours on short notice. Assignments to emergency incidents may require absence from duty station for up to 21 days. Occasionally required to work under adverse weather conditions such as noise, smoke, heat, rough terrain, dust, inclement weather, and exposure to poisonous plants, bees and poisonous snakes. Requires occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning and/or falling material.
FAIR LABOR STANDARD ACT: Non-Exempt. All hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours per work week shall receive cash compensation at the time and one-half (1½) rate.
BENEFITS: Employee will receive one annual (vacation) leave day and one sick leave day for each month of service (month of service defined as employee being in work pay status for more than 15 calendar days of month). Position includes paid holidays.
