HUMANITIES ELECTIVES FOR LAW STUDENTS

We are happy for Law advisors to sign Law undergrad students into almost any of our courses based on the pre-requisite constraints in our handbook.

I include over the page the tables of first year courses, sorted by entry requirements and timetable slot, which I make available to our Humanities first-years in orientation; this may be of use when advising students of their various options when they are new to the subjects.

·  This is an updated version which is modified for particular constraints applying to Law students. You will obviously need to check the handbook for senior courses.

·  This list is also useful because it excludes the programme-specific courses (Social Work, Performing/Creative Arts) which are only available to students in those specific programmes. Anything in these lists below is a viable elective, the non-available programme courses are not reflected.

·  Please note that Humanities has stringent restrictions on timetable clashes, and will not usually authorise students wishing to register for courses in the same slot; very few of our subjects are set up for recorded lectures to be available online.

Changes from previous years:

You may wish to note the following recent tweaks to the timetable/course offerings, which could trip you up if you go by previous years’ rules:

·  HST1005F, Making of the Modern World Economy, has been discontinued and is not on offer this year.

·  Politics first-year courses are not available to students outside the major, therefore are not available as Law electives.

·  Psychology has relaxed its first-year entrance requirements to require Mathematics or proficient NBT QL only, i.e. they are no longer assessing points.

·  REL1014F, Thinking About Religion in the Social Sciences, is not running this year.

·  Social Work has moved one of its first year courses in to the first semester, so it now has one F and one S course, both scheduled in 4th period.

Senior courses without stringent entry requirements.

It may help for advising purposes to be aware of particular subjects which are a bit vague and hand-wavy on senior course entrance requirements, and may thus be useful for students in difficulty who need a senior credit at short notice.

·  Classics. The major in Classical Studies does not have first-year requirements, and entry into many of its second-year courses requires only second-year status.

·  History. Second-year History courses other than the core major course HST2040F require only 2 or more courses in “historical, social science or cultural studies”, i.e. almost anything we offer except languages.

·  Philosophy. Second-year Philosophy courses other than the core major course PHI2041S and PHI2044F Philosophy of Maths require only second-year status.

·  Gender Studies and African Studies. Second-year Gender Studies courses and AXL2200S require only second-year status.

·  AXL1200S, Africa: Culture, Identity and Globalisation has a smaller credit value than the standard, 8 instead of 18, I have removed it from the list because I don’t think it really applies to Law students. (It’s designed for Engineers). Point them towards the second-year version instead.

·  Film and Media courses (any FAM code) are NOT available as electives to non-Humanities students, the department has space constraints.

·  Drama courses may be a little tricky for timetabling purposes, as they require a full afternoon’s practical per week in addition to the scheduled lectures. There is, however, no reason Law students can’t take the Drama courses if they can make the timetable work.

·  FIN1009S, Images in Conflict is taught on the Hiddingh campus in the second semester, students may wish to be aware of the travel time implications when planning a timetable.

·  Xhosa Communication 1 (SLL1101F, SLL 1102S) are initial Xhosa courses designed for students who do not speak the language: students who are Xhosa-speaking at home, or whose home language is a related Nguni tongue (Zulu, Swati, Ndebele) should NOT be permitted to register. They should take the Isixhosa Language & Literature Studies courses instead.

o  Sesotho is not an Nguni language, so native Sesotho speakers can take Xhosa Communication, and Xhosa speakers can take Sesotho Communication.

·  European languages courses (French, Italian, German, etc) first-year courses are for students who have never studies the language before. Students with Matric or equivalent in a subject go straight into the second-year course.

o  Some students present with some language proficiency which is not Matric-level, or not formalised. They may be admitted to higher level language courses after assessment by the Head of Section for that language, who will sign a concession form granting access to the appropriate course for their level of proficiency.
