Contemporary Worship Leader
One of God’s most beautiful gifts to us is the gift of music. Sacred music of all styles adds an emotional dimension stirring the spirit for passionate worship of God. The role of the Contemporary Worship Leader is vital in helping Carlisle UM Church with its mission to share the love of Jesus Christ and in leading the congregation in music to lift up worship that honors Him. The Contemporary Worship Leader draws people into worshiping God through music and lyrics carefully chosen through prayer. The Contemporary Worship Leader is responsible for the mood and readiness of the congregation to hear God's spoken word through the pastor.
Qualifications:
The Contemporary Worship Leader must possess strong musical skills (both vocal and instrumental), and have either formal musical training and/or significant experience in leading a music ministry team. This position requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work under the direction of the Lead Pastor, Associate Pastor and in concert with other church staff and volunteers. The Contemporary Worship Leader must have gifts and graces for a contemporary style of worship and have an obvious love of Jesus Christ and the church. The individual must maintain a high regard for the church as God’s instrument in the world and display appropriate Christian discipleship. The Contemporary Worship Leader must become a member of Carlisle UM Church.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead in Excellence
Plan the music portion of the Sunday contemporary worship experience for Carlisle UM Church. Selects music and plans order of music in keeping with theme set by pastor.
Work in a consultation role with the Lead Pastor and Associate Pastorin developing weekly contemporary worship services.
Develop, train and rehearse musical teams necessary to effectively lead worship in Sunday Contemporary worship services, and any additional Contemporary worship services yet to be developed. Schedule weekly rehearsals to properly prepare the musical team for the Sunday contemporary service.
Lead short times of prayer and devotion with the music team, especially in rehearsals.
Identify, recruit, develop and deploy vocalists and instrumentalists for the overall praise and worship music ministry.
Be available for additional events, festivals or music activities sponsored by Carlisle UM Church on an as needed basis.
Continuously develop new resources appropriate for Carlisle’s worship context.
Take leadership in overseeing Carlisle’s compliance with CCLI license, and be responsible for care and organization of music resources.
Oversee the sound equipment and the sound technicians to control the quality and volume of the sound of the voices and the musical instruments.
Serve as contributing musician/vocalist of Contemporary Worship Leadership Team.
Participate in Core Staff meetings bimonthly.
Lead Congregation in Praise and Worship
Lead the congregation in praise and worship of The Triune God at the Sunday morning contemporary service.
Use music to lift up, challenge and comfort.
Be willing and able to offer prayer or scripture between songs as appropriate to the songs or theme.
Be sensitive to the style of music that best fits the needs of the congregation.
Lead in Reverence
Lead the worship team in showing an attitude of respect and reverence for what they do. The worship team reflects the attitudes of the leader. The Leader’s role is to model an attitude of reverence and a deep joy and gratitude for being able to lead the congregation into worship. Recognize and make sure that the members of the worship team understand, that worship isn't about them or showing off their talents, but about helping the congregation worship and honor God.
Lead the congregation with a deep desire to draw others to know the Lord.
Lead with Life Example
Maintain the moral and ethical standards of the Christian faith and the United Methodist Church on the job and outside the workplace as an employee and representative of our church. A praise and worship leader's life, as viewed by the congregation, has as much or more effect on the worship attitude of the congregation as a well-planned flow of music and singing from the worship team. The role of a praise and worship leader is to lead by how he conducts his life and how he treats others.
The previous list of responsibilities is not to be considered as all-inclusive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned or current responsibilities modified after consultation with the Lead Pastor and the Leadership Council.
Working Relationships:
The Contemporary Worship Leader shall perform the above responsibilities under the direction and supervision of the Lead Pastor of Carlisle UM Church. Questions or problems related to the job should first be discussed with the Lead Pastor.
The Contemporary Worship Leader shall work in cooperation with all pastor(s), staff, Leadership Council, church members and volunteers.
The Lead Pastor shall evaluate the Contemporary Worship Leader annually with review by a representative of the Leadership Council.
The Contemporary Worship Leader is a part-time position.
