Operations (OP) SO-OP Commodore Michael Johnson

Executive Summary:

Division 10 Operations in February commenced with a Division sponsored 1-hour TCT class, the 2013 Operations Workshop with added sessions on marlinspike, the new AUXDATA Order Management system, Sector San Diego Surface Operations Instruction, a PPE inspection, and patrols on Lake Pleasant and Lake Roosevelt. The patrols included QE check rides for new crewmembers and 3rd year requalification.

Details:

  • In conjunction with the SO-MT, on Sunday, February 10 we held an operations training day at Bass Pro Shop in Mesa, AZ. While we had initially planned a four-hour session from 0900-1300, due to the overwhelming response from our operations members, we added a second session in the afternoon. Included in the training were two Division sponsored annual 1 hour TCT refresher courses led by Dave Esparza; two 2013 Operations Workshops, updates and instruction on the Sector San Diego Surface Operations Instruction, and local issues led by COMO Michael Johnson; two sessions on the soon to be deployed AUXDATA Order Management system led by COMO Gary Taylor; two marlinspike sessions led by Pat O’Leary; and two Lake Powell updates led by Mike Chapman. Fifty-four of our surface operations and communications members, from all Flotillas attended the two sessions.
  • In conjunction with the operations training day, we also conducted the first ever Division PPE inspection. John Koutras, VCDR and John Whiting, DSO-MA inspected several inflatable and standard PFDs, and anti-exposure coveralls to verify serviceability, presence and working order of all PPE, made sure all PPE was properly attached pursuant to the Coast Guard Rescue and Survival Standards Manual, replaced batteries (at Division expense) in all lights, provided somereplacement PPE, and logged the results.
  • Island Girl from 10-8 and La Vida from 10-2 patrolled on Lake Pleasant on 2/16 and 2/17, primarily to provide platforms for third year requalification check rides for two coxswains and two crew members. QEs were Dave Esparza and Joe MacDonald. The radio guard was by East Valley Mobile 14. One member was injured when she slipped on the tongue of the boat trailer after the boat had been loaded.
  • Flotilla 10-1 facilities Dream Catcher and Excitation patrolled Lake Roosevelt on February 21 and 22, and Dream Catcher and Flotilla 10-1 facility Andrew Thomas patrolled on Lake Roosevelt on February 23. The radio guard was Tucson Mobile 9. These patrols were provided at the request of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the FLW National Bass Tournament. In addition, two new crewmembers successfully completed their check rides, and two crewmembers successfully completed their third year requalification check ride.
  • As a reminder to our surface operations members:

1)Please request your patrols as early as possible

2)Make sure you complete a comprehensive mission brief and conduct a GAR evaluation prior to commencing patrol, and again whenever conditions change

3)Review the Sector San Diego Surface Operations Instruction—on Division website

4)Complete and send your after action reports to LT John Bannon with copies to the SO-OP and DCDR by the day after completing the patrol

5)Inform the cognizant Lake Liaison of your patrol at least 3 days before the patrol date, so that the Liaison can inform lake authorities of your presence

6)Make sure that your facility is in top condition, both mechanically and in appearance, and that you wear the correct uniform and present a proper appearance--remember, we represent the USCG

7)If your PFD has not been inspected, please take the effort to see that it gets inspected before you use it. Everyone has to come home safe.
