INDUSTRIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department

CaliforniaStatePolytechnicUniversity, Pomona

Minutes of Meeting #79

February 19, 2003

1. Introduction: Chair Phelan was unable to attend because of other business. Dr. Rosenkrantz chaired the meeting in his stead. The meeting was opened with a round of self introductions.

2. Reports and Discussion Items

Academic Programs-Rosenkrantz

The Department is conducting assessment in order to improve the curriculum. The procedure using QFD for our ABET review was successful, now we are questioning our curricula. One of the methods for assessing our curricula is the use of an Industry Survey. Dr. Rosenkrantz explained the makeup of the survey and the questions which were being asked. Once it is complete the survey will be distributed via the Internet.

Suggestions were made by the members; care must be taken in selecting the group to be surveyed or the results may be biased; determining if the respondent is a member of management may be useful; could the survey field be wider than just Cal Poly associates; would adding the employer be useful?

Changes in department personnel:

  • Professor O’Neil has retired effective end of Winter Quarter. His Spring Quarter classes which had been scheduled are being covered by other faculty members

Professor Zook is seriously ill with lymphoma, and is in the City of Hope for treatment. He has filed a request for retirement effective beginning of Spring Quarter. His classes for this quarter are being covered by various faculty members. Spring Quarter classes will be rescheduled around his absence.

Dr. Rosenkrantz will be on sabbatical for the Spring Quarter.

The fact that the department teaches a number of service courses for other engineering departments allows us some liberty in shuffling classes.

Enrollment and Recruiting:

  • 40 Industrial Engineering applicants have been admitted for Fall 2003
  • 15 Manufacturing Engineering applicants have been admitted for the same period.
  • The cut-off for applicants was November. This is unfortunate for smaller departments and is a bad sign to the local Community Colleges.
  • The suggestion was made that we should keep applicants open and “raise the bar” for admittance. The enrollment management policies of the university should be revised to allow for individual departments to continue to accept all applicants instead of cutting off applicants at some arbitrary date.

Assessment:

Initial responses have been received from grads regarding the “Skill, Knowledge, Attitude, and Ability” areas (SKAA’s). High marks have been given to team work and communication.Lower scores received for professional ethics. Historical trends are more meaningful than actual ratings. Additional responses will be solicited.
