RE:

Training for School Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The Department of Environmental Protection, together with our School IPM training partners from Rutgers Cooperative Extension and Outreach and from the Pest Control Industry, along with the New Jersey Association of Designated Persons (NJADP) would like to announce our training schedule for the 20012 / 2013 school year.

The FAX registration form for these trainings is attached below with this year’s training dates and locations.

IPM Coordinator Training is required once for each School IPM Coordinator, although many IPM Coordinators return annually for updates and refreshers.

School IPM Coordinator Training is also very strongly recommended for each school building administrator; the Principal or similar title that oversees the building and grounds. Although the training is only required for the IPM Coordinator, each schools’ head administrator is legally responsible for chemical pesticide applications in their building a n d on school grounds, including playing fields.

Frequently in non-public schools the Principal ‘is’ the IPM Coordinator anyway, but in non-public schools where this is not the case, as well as in public schools, Principals will benefit from an understanding of their new legal responsibilities.

The Principal Title may not delegate away these responsibilities; various chores may be delegated out to other individuals by way of each school’s site specific school IPM plan, but these chores will always be the responsibility of the Principal.

Enforcement inspections for School IPM will begin again on September 10th and will continue throughout the school year. Frequently inspection work coincides with upcoming training events in that inspection work will occur in the areas surrounding an upcoming training, e.g., the first training is on September 28th in Paterson NJ so schools in that general area may expect a School IPM inspection.

After publishing our free school IPM training schedule, each year some schools will ask us about hosting an additional training at their school or facility. Sometimes it’s because the offered dates and locations are not convenient for them, or for other considerations altogether.

Whatever the reason, whenever possible we’ll accommodate requests for additional trainings but only if the following conditions can be met, please understand that there will be some cost associated with additional trainings.

Schools hoping for an additional training during the 2012 / 2013 school year should be able to:

ü  Open the training to the surrounding community

ü  Provide parking for upwards of 75 to 100 cars

ü  Have seating available for approximately 100 people

ü  Provide a continental breakfast for between 75 to 100 people

Looking ahead

Please understand that donated or free space for School IPM Trainings is what has allowed us to provide free School IPM trainings for the New Jersey school community since 2001.

For the 2013 / 2014 school year, any school that can provide the first three requirements for a training, i.e., open the training to the surrounding community, provide parking for upwards of 75 to 100 cars and have seating available for approximately 100 people; and would like to offer your facility for future consideration as a site for a free school IPM training, please contact Art Pierfy of the New Jersey Association of Designated Persons (NJADP) directly at 908.227.0575 or by email at

Not every school or district that volunteers a facility will be chosen for a training session in the 2013 / 2014 school year. We decide on facilities based largely on locations that best fit The State’s school IPM training needs. However, if we don’t know your facility is available, we won’t be able to consider it as an option.

Have a great school year in a happy and healthy school environment!

School IPM Coordinators: 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR

Making the plan work

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) training sessions for school IPM coordinators and other school personnel with administrative responsibilities in accordance with the new IPM law, are being offered by the NJ Association of Designated Persons (NJADP) in concert with NJ DEP, Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension, and by Pest Control Industry Volunteers.

IPM Coordinators will receive certification of attendance to fulfill the MANDATORY

Training requirement as stated in the NJDEP Pesticide Control Program regulations at

N.J. A.C. 7:30-13.3 Training does not need to be repeated annually; although people in the field do attend annually to keep up to date.

The sessions will help IPM Coordinators implement the new IPM law in regards to such things as

Non-Pesticide pest management; parental notification, the 72 hour notification rule; low-impact pest management; record keeping, and dealing with pest emergencies.
