WOLFSON COLLEGE, OXFORD

STIPENDIARY JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP 2018

in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies

Wolfson College, a postgraduate college of the University of Oxford, proposes to appoint one stipendiary Junior Research Fellow in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies.

Over the past few decades, Tibetan Studies has developed rapidly from a discipline mainly devoted to classical Buddhist literature into a highly diversified field, covering a period from pre-history to the 21st century and comprising various methods and approaches such as textual studies, linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, art history, study of religions, and philosophy. The Junior Research Fellowship is meant to reflect this diversity. Wolfson College seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar with a broad background in the history, literature, religious traditions, and culture of Tibet and the Himalayas, preferably combining several of the aspects mentioned above in their work. The person elected will pursue research in this field and make the results available to the public. We are looking for a person who can demonstrate the ability for original research and enjoys engaging with students and colleagues.

Oxford offers a unique research environment with several Faculties working in the field of Asian Studies, Colleges dedicated to advanced interdisciplinary research, outstanding libraries, and museum collections related to Tibet and the Himalayas. For further information, see http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/clusters/tibetan-himalayan.

Main tasks of the post:

·  to undertake research and publish on Tibetan and Himalayan cultures

·  to be based in Oxford

·  to help coordinate events and activities of the Tibetan and Himalayan Studies Centre at Wolfson

·  to devote an average of four hours per week to support for Tibetan and Himalayan Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies during full term, which will include a modest amount of teaching

·  to participate actively in the academic life of the College and

·  to act as College Advisor to a number of Wolfson students, meeting them on arrival and at least once a term thereafter, to offer pastoral advice and support.

Qualifications and experience required:

·  postgraduate experience in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies or a related field

·  to hold a doctorate in Tibetan Studies or a related field by commencement of the Fellowship

·  excellent language skills in literary and/or spoken Tibetan

The Fellowship will be held from 1 January 2018 until 31 August 2020. Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained their doctorate within the last five years, and have not already held a stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship.

The annual stipend will be £32,000, plus any general percentage increase in salaries, agreed by the Remuneration Committee, that may come into effect. These Fellowships carry Common Table rights (currently up to £43 a week for own meals in Hall). Fellows are entitled to apply for College accommodation at the College rates. The Fellow is permitted to undertake up to six hours' teaching per week. The Fellowship will not normally be tenable with another stipendiary position: if, exceptionally, the Fellowship is awarded to a person holding such a position, some adjustment in the stipend may be made. The Fellow will normally be required to reside within 12 miles of central Oxford.

The appointment will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a medical questionnaire and the provision of proof of the right to work in the UK.

Non-EU citizens will require a Tier 2 Visa in order to take up this fellowship, and should therefore be in a position to comply with the current Home Office regulations in force at the time of application. Applicants who would need a work permit if appointed to the post are asked to note that under the UK’s points-based migration system they will need to demonstrate that they have sufficient points, and in particular that (i) they have sufficient English-language skills (evidenced by having passed a test in English, or coming from a majority English-speaking country, or having taken a degree taught in English), and (ii) they have sufficient funds to maintain themselves and any dependents until they receive their first salary payment. Please note it is not possible to hold a Research Fellowship with a student visa. For further information, please see https://www.gov.uk/tier-2-general
