Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of the goals of teachers and staff at P.S DuPont Middle School is to create a community of literacy. With this goal in mind the teachers are beginning a new initiative, a school-wide literacy program, for the 2014-2015 school year. This program will involve all staff members and students reading the same book, Seedfolks, by Paul Fleischman, at the beginning of the year. Through this plan we hope to begin the year with a shared literary experience and a continued passion for reading.

Books provide a gateway to shared learning experiences. The purpose in using the award- winning novel, Seedfolks, next year is to create a global community of learners that see the interconnectedness of ideas and themes through literature.

In order to make this program a reality we are asking for any donations to help purchase the books. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to purchase 1,000 books for students which will be reused every three years within the school to help keep the program running. Any donations no matter how big or small will help to see this program become a success. In order to make this program a possibility, please either send cash or checks payable to Kristen Moaikel (a staff English Language Arts teacher) and have students turn the money into homeroom teachers or send to the school at the above address. We are hoping to collect donations through cash or check until June 1st, 2014 and all additional donations will then be made through www.donorschoose.com. You can make this donation by searching the name: Kristen Moaikel with the program title, Seedfolks For All Folks.

Thank you so much for your continued support this year. We hope that in support of this program parents will also participate in reading this book to continue the rich conversations about literature that are so necessary for literary growth.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me, Kristen Moaikel at or Tracy Selekman at

Have a wonderful May month and will we send an update when donations can be made online.

Warm Regards,

Kristen Moaikel and Tracy Selekman
