Mod 71: Behavior, Cognitive & Group Therapies

Insight therapies: as a person becomes more self-aware, psychological distress SHOULD lessen

Psychoanalysis uncover unconscious conflicts gain insight

Humanistic more aware of ideal self insight

71.1Behavior therapies (question how helpful self-awareness is during a panic attack?) treat symptoms of disorder to change person’s behavior change behavior change one’s life

Accomplish thru learning theories/principles

Classical Conditioning Techniques

You already have notes over (1) counterconditioning through virtual reality exposure therapy!!

(2)Aversive Conditioning

Opposite of exposure therapy actually introduce a negative stimulus to stop a bad habit or unwanted behavior

Goal is to stop the behavior [punishment]

Thumb sucking, smoking, drinking [give alcoholics Antabuse, causes violent vomiting conditioned taste aversion]

Only a short term solution

Quickly realize only fear a specific setting like the therapist’s office

71.2 Operant Conditioning

You already have notes over operant conditioning through a token economy!!

71.3 Cognitive Therapies

You already have notes through Aaron Beck!!!

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

Def: use both cognitive & behavioral therapybecome aware of negative thoughts & behaviors/reactions alter both

Needs practice!!

Work on behavior 1st then thoughts

Anxiety & mood disorders have issues with emotional regulation

To be effective, need to keep track of positive behaviors & thoughts (and practice)

Works well with OCD

Attack compulsions by looking at obsession in a different light

When start a compulsion realize “It’s my compulsion!”

Try to remember it has a biological causereward self for performing a different, positive behavior to stop the compulsion

Actually counterconditioning AND retraining your brain & neural circuits

Very effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD & anorexia

Can conduct this type of therapy over the internet

71.4 Group & Family Therapies

Group Therapy

Def: small groups where people can benefit by interacting with each other

Benefits:

  • Save time & $$$$ and can be just as effective as individual therapy
  • “Social laboratory” safe environment to practice social skills AND get others’ opinions--feedback
  • Client sees they are NOT alone

Family Therapy

Def: realize it’s not one person’s problem but that family can influence/reinforce negative behaviors as well as being affected by it [Brian’s mom in Bellevue video]

Family tension can exacerbate or cause dysfunction & distress

Help family cope & realize effect on the distressed family member

Focus on communication

[Effective for schizophrenics & anorexics]

Self-Help Groups

Used by many; groups for illnesses, bereavement, substance abuse
