Measuring, Documenting, and Interpreting the Flood of 2010

United State Geological Survey (USGS) Mass.-R.I.WaterScienceCenter

Thursday, September 23, 2010

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Gardner Bent and Phil Zarriello of the USGS MA-RI Water Science Center in Northborough, MA will speak about the March-April 2010 Flood. During the flood, the USGS focused on streamflow measurements to provide accurate and timely data to other Federal and State agencies and the public. Following the flood, the agency focused on documenting high-water marks (HWMs) with the USArmy Corps of Engineers in rivers across Rhode Island. The USGS has started a cooperative study with FEMA to use the new surveyed HWMs to determine actual flood elevation levels, improve forecasts of flood events, and enhance identification and documentation of river flood hazard areas.
