Explosion Free Pneumatic Vacuum Conveying
Avoiding explosion in vacuum conveying is a high priority for Volkmann, being the first company to obtain ATEX certification in Europe for vacuum conveying of powdered products having an MIE (Minimum Ignition Energy) greater than 1 mJ(millijoules). The certification covers all elements of the conveying system including any flexible hose. ATEX lists 13 potential sources of ignition. Based on Volkmann’s system design, only static energy is a risk out of the potential 13, since there are no other possibilities within Volkmann’s all-pneumatic design. Attention to grounding and the use of static conductive hoses ensures the static discharge cannot occur, thereby avoiding all explosion potential. Indeed, recent studies by Dr. Glor in Europe indicates that the brush discharge does not occur even at less than 1 mJ levels. As an added bonus, this protection is available as standard for protection for Zone 2 (Class II) applications; there is no increase in the cost of the equipment.
Volkmann also offers INEX (inert explosion proof) equipment using nitrogen as the conveying gas for Zone 1 (Class I) applications where fumes are present. Volkmann INEX reactor loaders safely convey dry or wet powder and granules into hazardous/explosion risk areas.
By using a sophisticated, patent-pending nitrogen purging function, INEX reduces oxygen content within the unloaded batch to below 7% (or lower when required), maintaining the material’s inert safety while providing dust-free transport.
The INEX features a closed station which can be flushed from within by drawing in the washing liquid or through WIP/CIP. Standard lightweight and pressure-rated systems are available with INEX functionality.
The INEX reactor loaders are part of Volkmann’s wide range of safe and user-friendly vacuum conveying systems which feature complete pneumatic transfer and no electric components. Volkmann systems are able to provide effective and reliable transport due to their multiple-stage Venturi Multijector® vacuum pump which allows dense phase transportation under vacuum without segregation, damage or abrasion. All Volkmann vacuum conveying systems can be used for dust explosion zones (with material MIE > 1 mJ). Systems can be stationary or mobile depending on the application.
