COURSE DESCRIPTION:

In 7th Grade students examine the full scope of Texas History, including the cultures of Native Americans living in Texas prior to European exploration and the eras of mission building, colonization, revolution, republic and statehood. The focus is on key individuals, events, issues and the impact of each era. Students identify regions of Texas, the distribution of population within the regions and consider the factors that have caused Texas to change. Throughout the year, a number of primary and secondary sources area also examined to help students be aware of the rich, diverse cultural background of Texas. Students will also be introduced to the structure, foundations of municipal, county and state governments.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Spiral Notebook 100 pages or so, it can be left in the classroom (recycle and an old one)

Map colors (No Markers please)

Highlighter (your choice of color)

Pencil Sharpener

Ruler

Zipper Bag for Trapper(for map colors etc.)

Texas Travel Guide (It is free & can be ordered online @ Texas Travel Guide)

CLASS RULES/EXPECTATIONS:

Class rules will be discussed during the first day class. As a teacher my approach to Texas History is a little different. I’m a story teller, and if given the chance; I will share a lifetime of learning and experiences in Texas History. At the end of the year it is my hope students will leave class not only with various amounts of “book sense” but a sense of who you are as a Texan.

TUTORING DAYS/TIME

3:10 – 4:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

(Wednesday - Faculty Meetings)

Check with me as the sport schedule changes, football, volleyball, basketball, track tennis.

HOME WORK POLICY:

Some homework (very little) is assigned during each week. On most occasions class time is given to complete the assignment. Each student should be able to complete the assigned homework during class time. If you do not finish a large portion of it; it means you are wasting time.

GRADING POLICY:

No grade below 50 is given on any assignment or test. The only exception is when projects are assigned. If the project is not turned in on assigned date, the grade recorded will be a 0).

No extra credit work is given

LATE WORK POLICY:

No late work will be excepted unless the student has an excused absence, illness or note from parent/guardian. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for any missed assignments.

6 WEEKS TOPICS:

1st Six Weeks Introduction: Are you a Texian? Chapters 2,3,4,5

2nd Six Weeks – Chapters 6, 7, 8 (Project – Class 2A Football Districts, usually due the week after Thanksgiving)

3rd Six Weeks Chapter 9, 10, 11 (Begin preparations & reports for Texas Tea)

4th Six Weeks – Chapter 12, 13, 14 (Finish reports for Texas Tea, with the Texas Tea held during Public School Week)

5th Chapter 16, 17, 18 Chapter 21

6th Six Weeks – Chapters 29, 30, 31 (Adopt A Cemetery Project, Lavaca County Historical Commission, Texas Historical Commission
