Course Description:Writing Skills for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

3 hrs. Credits

Instructs deaf and hard-of-hearing students in basic writing skills by emphasizing English language usage,including sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, paragraphs and essays.

Textbook: Your teacher will provide instructional materials. English Essentials by John Langan nand Clear Thinking and Writing by John Langan.

Supplies – Loose leaf notebook and paper, pencil, pen, eraser and binder with divider tabs.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to—

  1. Describe and identify the parts of speech.
  2. Demonstrate or identify the verb tenses.
  3. To use appropriate grammar, spelling, and punctuation for written English..
  4. Work with sentence modifiers.
  5. Practice brainstorming for main ideas and support and concrete details.
  6. Develop and utilize the ability to write paragraphs and essays. The students will write 3 or 4 paragraphs/essays per semester.
  7. Take a pre-test at the beginning of the class and a post-test at the ending of the class.

  3. Individual instruction
  4. Class assignments
  5. Computer based activities

Evaluation Techniques: Grading Scale

Attendance 10% A = 90% - 100%

Class Assignments/Homeworks 30% B = 80% - 89%

Quizzes 30% C = 70% - 79%

Final Exam 30% D = 60% - 69%

100% F = 0% - 59%

ATTENDANCE:

Students will accomplish most of their work in class. Students who miss class are responsible for work they missed. Three absences will be allowed.After 3 absences 2 points will be taken from final grade for each day absent. As a result, attendance is very important. Students are responsible to call or contact RCDHH office when they will be absent or late.

late assignments AND MAKE-up work:

Completed homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. 5 points will be deducted from late assignments if turned in within one week. Assignments turned in after one week will receive 50% deduction on assignments. If a student doesn’t understand the homework they need to contact the instructor before class to discuss assignment or arrange tutoring.

Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw from a course shall not exceed 3/4 the duration of any class. Check the TCC Academic Calendarfor the deadline that applies to the course(s). Begin with the process with a discussion with the faculty member assigned to the course. Contact the Advisement Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit...Withdrawal and/or change to an audit from a course after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.

Inclement Weather: TCC rarely closes. If extreme weather conditions or emergency

situations arise, TCC always gives cancellation notices to radio and television stations.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

  • Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;
  • Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;
  • Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;
  • Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.

Course Drop or Withdrawal:A student who has been found responsible for academic dishonesty in a course may not drop or withdraw from the course. If the student processes a drop or withdrawal from the course, the action will be reversed and the appropriate grade will be recorded on the student's transcript.
