TIQA Example Paragraph

Students: below is a list of several topics from the children’s book One.

o  bullying

o  feeling powerless

o  leadership

o  taunting

o  group behavior

o  superiority

o  individuality

o  power in numbers

o  self-esteem

o  self-respect

I have chosen the topic of individuality from the book. I will now ask myself “what is the writer’s opinion on individuality?” and reread the text to form my opinion. I will also use the previous day’s guided questions as needed.

Questions for the crafting of a thematic topic statement section of the TIQA Handout, students may ask themselves the following questions:

·  If you were one of the main characters in the story, what major concern, objection, or issue would you have with the other character?

·  Does a character say or do something in the story that alarms you?

·  What major conflict occurs in the story?

·  Does the behavior of a character seem unacceptable to you? If yes, why?

·  What thematic topic statement is the author trying to get across about these characters?

·  What comment is the author trying to make about people's ethical responsibilities, in other words, people's understanding of right versus wrong?

·  What topic from One occurs in other stories you have read? How are the topics similar? If you find a similarity, what thematic topic statement can you make about both stories?

·  What character traits best describe the main character or characters? How do you know? Can you use these traits to help develop a theme statement?

For the analysis section of the TIQA Handout, students can answer the guided questions below.

·  Based on your chosen topic, what outcome, result, effect, opinion, or new understanding of people or humanity does the author want the readers to have?

·  Based on your chosen topic, does your topic take place currently in our society? What are the events in our society associated with the topic? What conclusion and opinion can you make about the topic based on those events in society? If so, what is the author’s opinion about the society, so to speak, in One?

·  Based on your chosen topic, does your topic happen worldwide? What conclusion and opinion can you make about the topic in the story if it occurs around the world?

·  Is there a direct link between the introduction of quotes and the quoted text in your analysis section?

Are you making sure you are ANALYZING why or how the quoted material proves your thematic topic statement?

Topic: individuality

Thematic topic statement: Individuality can mean making the right decision for oneself even when the same decision is difficult for others.

TIQA Paragraph

Topic Sentence: The author Kathryn Otoshi uses individuality in her story to show readers the importance of standing up for themselves even if others will not.

Introduce Quote: In the story the color Red was unfriendly and mean to all the other colors and “everyone was afraid of him.” After One showed up, One stood up to Red and said “No” when Red told One to stop laughing.

Quote: After Red left because One told him he would not stop laughing, Red told the other colors “If someone is brave and picks on me, I, for One, stand up and say, “No.”

Analysis:By standing up for himself, Red showed the other characters it’s not okay for others to take advantage of them or make them feel bad, but it is okay to disagree with the way others speak to them and treat them.
