NON FICTION READING/WRITING RESPONSE
New York City Homeless Boom Puts Shelters in Lap of Wealthy
An excerpt from an article inUSA`Today
Faced with overcrowding in New York City’s homeless shelters, the mayor has opened up ten new shelters across the city, pushing some into wealthy areas where residents fear their new neighbors will bring in crime and drugs.
At last count, more than 46,000 people sought shelter every night in New York, the highest number ever recorded. The crisis stems from a lack of affordable housing and a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
Unlike other cities, New York is required by law to provide shelter to every person who seeks it. As this crisis got worse, the city’s emergency authority went into action, often disregarding the community and getting their approval. This has created problems in wealthy neighborhoods. Also, a shelter is located right across the street from an elementary school with a playground.
WRITING RESPONSE:
In 7-9 sentences, using 3 vocabulary words underlined, express your opinion to the facts stated in this article. Is the government justified in setting up these shelters without first getting the approval of the community? Should the government have sanctioned these plans for construction of these shelters? Are you an advocate of this cause? Should a coalition be formed? Make sure you write your paragraph in cursive!
