What is a Schlumberger Coding Club?

A Schlumberger Coding Club is a before- or after-schoolactivity where students learn computer coding languages. The club should have at least 20 students and they must receive at least 20 hours computer time over the school year. The programming languages taught in coding club may include Scratch, Alice, Java, App Design, Python, HTML or other languages. For the 2015-2016 school year, grants of up to$2,500 are available for Schlumberger Coding Clubs.

Coding Club Guidelines

  • There must be at least 20 students in the club, and they must receive at least 20 hours computer time learning a programming language. These may include Scratch, Alice, Java, App Design, Python, HTML or other programming languages.
  • The sponsoring teacher must have knowledge of computer languages. If necessary the sponsor may use the grant attend certified training programs or to hire an outside consultant to learn more about computer coding languages.
  • Students must participate in a coding competition, or submit a project to a local or national competition.
  • Sponsoring teachers must join CSTA (free).
  • Sponsoring teachers must submit a plan for the club before the grant is given. A final review of the club and its activities is requiredat the end of the school year.
  • Each club will be visited at least twice during the school year by a Schlumberger representative; more frequent visits or support can be requested at any time.

Please provide a preliminary budget for the 2015-2016 school year. Up to $1,000 can be applied toward teacher training, teacher stipend,or an outside consultant. Remaining funds should be used for coding curriculum, hardware, and competitions. Changes can be made to this budget as needed during the school year. In addition to the $2,500 grant,Schlumberger provides t-shirts anda Schlumberger Coding Club banner for the school.If you have more items than space allows, please attach a separate sheet with items listed.
