Roundtable: Fieldwork education networking for supervisors, educators, and OT students

Presenters: Roberta (Rob) Cohen, MS, OTR

Elizabeth (Liz) Voight, MS, OTR

Abstract: Recently there have been many OT journal and newsletter articles on fieldwork training addressing tutorials, training certificate programs, models, curriculums, roles, benefits and supports (to name a few). This roundtable will provide the opportunity for experienced supervisors, recent supervisors, and those who are interested in becoming supervisors to network and share ideas and resources.

Learning Objectives:

  • Fieldwork supervisors will be able to share curriculum, network, and make connections so that they can provide a well-rounded experience for OT students
  • OTs who are considering becoming fieldwork supervisors may feel more comfortable after attending this roundtable knowing that there are mentors to support them
  • Educators can have more interaction with fieldwork supervisors and get “a better feel” of their area of expertise and resources available to the university
  • Recent fieldwork students can discuss their experiences and offer suggestions from “the student perspective”
  • OT students can experience one of the ways that seasoned therapists continually challenge and educate themselves

Discussion Topics (open):

  • Matching the site and the student (interest? location? hours?)
  • Matching the supervisor and the student (is this an option?), interview?
  • Supervisor experience (years working as an OT, previous mentoring, AOTA certificate program?, sharing a student, having more than 1 student per supervisor)
  • What makes a well-rounded experience/curriculum (building a caseload, supervision & instruction time, “field trips” to other “related” sites, projects and presentations)
  • What to do when the fieldwork is not working out (personality conflicts, educational “holes”, motivational challenges, etc.)
  • How does the university recognize the supervisor post (letter for CEUs?, available course credits?)
