NOTICE OF RACE

1.To be sailed at Loch Lomond Sailing Club, Stirlingshire, Scotland, from Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August 2013, organised by Loch Lomond Sailing Club and the British Canoe Union Sailing Committee.

2.Racing will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing (2013-2016), the RYA Prescriptions, the ICF Canoe Sailing Rules (valid from 1 January 2009) and the Sailing Instructions. The current Loch Lomond Byelaws will also apply.

3.The Championship is open to boats of the International 10 Square Metre Canoe Class whose helms are members of the BCU or other national authority recognised by the ICF. There will be separate concurrent Championships for standard International Canoes (ICs) and for asymmetric spinnaker-fitted ICs (ACs) conforming to the ICF Rule Appendix 3. Boats not conforming to the IC Rules may be accepted at the discretion of the BCU Sailing Committee who will determine whether any such boat will be eligible for any prize. In particular canoes of the German Taifun Class are encouraged to enter for the Taifun Scottish Championship.

4.Registration will take place at Loch Lomond Sailing Club on Sunday, 28th July from 1830-1930 and on Monday 29th July from 1000. Sailing Instructions will be available at registration. The Sailing Instructions will include a maximum allowable capacity of a beverage worn on the body of 1.5 litres. A Briefing will take place at the club and the first race is planned to start at 1330 on 29th July. The intended programme of races is:

Day 1 / Races 1 and 2 (first start 1330)
Day 2 / Race 3 for the Sailing Challenge Cup
Day 3 / Races 4 and 5
Day 4 / Races 6 and 7
Day 5 / Races 8 and 9

Racing on Days 2 – 5 is scheduled to start at 1100, weather permitting. The Sailing Challenge Cup Race is scheduled for Day 2, but will be held over to Day 3 or 4 if wind conditions are inappropriate. In this case a second race will be brought forward to maintain 2 races per day.

All races will count towards the Europa Cup and National Championships and Scottish Taifun Championships. One discard will be allowed provided at least 6 races are completed and 2 results will be discarded if 9 races are completed.

ACs will sail windward–leeward courses, while ICs and Taifuns will sail triangle–based courses, apart from the Sailing Challenge Cup Race which will have a unique course.

5.All entries are to be made to the Loch Lomond Sailing Club, c/o Peter McLaren, address below. The entry fee is £135 for adults and £110 for juniors (juniors must be under 20 on the first day of the competition). Entries received by Monday 15th July 2013 will qualify for a £10 discount i.e. adults £125 and juniors £100. Entries postmarked after this date and entries made at Registration will be subject to the full fee.The entry fee includes the cost of the welcome barbeque and of the championship dinner. BCU Membership (or that of another national authority) and IC Measurement Certificates are to be available for inspection upon request. The Race Committee or the BCU Sailing Committee may inspect or measure any boat at any time.

6.Prizes to be awarded include the Europa Cup Trophies for the overall IC and AC winners. The Sailing Challenge Cup will be awarded to the winning IC in the Sailing Challenge Cup race and the Murphy Howard Cup to the first AC in Sailing Challenge Cup race. Other prizes to be awarded to UK IC sailors include the Quincey Cup for the UK National Championship winner, the Eric Freeman Trophy, the Ken Davies Trophy, the Baden Powell Veteran Bowl, the Vintage Walking Stick and the Novices Cup. UK sailors in ACs will compete for the Knowles Challenge Bowl, the Alan Perkes Trophy, the Campkin Cup and the AC Old Man's Trophy. Prizes will be awarded for the Taifun Class Championship.

7. Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See RRS Rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during or after the regatta.

8.Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of £3M.

9.If there is a conflict between this Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions, the Sailing Instructions will take precedence. Any change to this Notice of Race will be posted on the Class website at

Getting to Loch Lomond Sailing Club

1.The club is situated on the east shore of Loch Lomond, one mile north of Balmaha, on the B837 road to Rowardennan. A map can be seen at under “Club Info”/”How to Find Us”.

2.A suggested approach route from the south is M6, M74, M8 through Glasgow, Erskine Bridge, A82 to Balloch, A811 to Drymen, then B837 (a recently-opened extension to the M74 joins the M8 in west Glasgow). An alternative from the east coast is A696 & A68 or A1 from Newcastle, then A720 (Edinburgh Ring Road), M9 to Stirling, A811 to Drymen and then B837.

Ferries from continental Europe

3.There are a number of ferry routes crossing the southern North Sea and the Channel. The DFDS ferry from Ijmuiden to Newcastle is probably the most convenient. The ferry from Zeebrugge to Rosyth is not operating at present.

4.Boat parking space will be available at the club from Saturday 27th July and visitors arriving early are invited to join in club races on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (both will be long–distance races round islands; start time 1300). Access before Saturday 27th is possible by prior arrangement, as is safe boat storage for the following week.

5.Early booking is advised as this is peak holiday time.

6.Camping: Some space for small to medium tents is available within club grounds; book on the entry form, please. Some places for small campervans are also available. A smallfee will bepayable for tents and campervans. Anyone wishing space for a campervan must confirm availability of space with Peter McLaren (). A Camping and Caravan Club site is adjacent to the sailing club and is highly suitable for larger tents, caravans and motorhomes. Social Events

The provisional schedule of social events is –

Competitors’ tickets for the Welcome Barbeque and Championship dinner are included in the entry fee. Tickets for accompanying partners etc. can be booked on the entry form (Welcome barbecue £8 ; Dinner £15).

Tickets for everyone for the Scottish-themed dinner and entertainment cost £12 and should be booked on the entry form.

A range of activities will be available or suggested for families and friends, including boat trips on Loch Lomond, and a visit to a nearby island nature reserve. The club is also within easy reach of many major tourist attractions in Central Scotland.

Meals and Catering

Daily catering of soup, rolls, baked potatoes etc. will be available at the club at lunchtimes. Breakfast will be available daily. Evening meals are arranged for Monday (BBQ), Wednesday (themed evening) and Friday (Championship Dinner).

Early arrivals are welcome to join some club members for a pub meal on Saturday 27th July at the Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha. Competitors are invited to join club members on the evening of Sunday 28th July for an informal gathering in the bar at the club with food available around 1930. A small charge will be made to cover costs. If you wish to join this meal, this must be booked on the entry form.
