1.JOB DESCRIPTION

1.1JOB TITLE:COUNTRYSIDE WARDEN – DARTMOOR

1.2 SALARY: £16,000 per annum.

1.3 LOCATION:Based at Burrator Reservoir but will be required to work at other sites.

1.4 HOURS: 40 hours per week. Normal working hours will include weekends, Bank Holidays and some evenings.

1.5 RESPONSIBLE TO:Countryside and Angling Manager - Devon

  1. OVERALL PURPOSE

As part of a team of like-minded wardens and volunteers, you will take an active role in engaging the public and maintaining a variety of habitats and buildings at our picturesque Dartmoor sites. You will supervise and develop our fantastic team of volunteers, and work closely with student placements and trainees. Working to ensure the best visitor experience, you will develop informal recreation, angling, conservation, education and public access at Trust sites within the area.

  1. KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1Undertake day to day site and grounds maintenance to a high standard as directed, including grass cutting and litter picking.

3.2Actively engage, inform and advise visitors and stakeholders in the work of the Trust and its volunteers.

3.3Undertake risk assessment for tasks, taking into account the safety of employees, volunteers, and the public. Take a lead on Visitor Safety in the Countryside in the West Dartmoor area.

3.4Check site footpaths, furniture and other infrastructure in line with the Trust’s Public Safety Framework with an aim that no preventable accidents or incidents occur.

3.5Manage agri- environment schemes and undertake practical species and habitat management work to enhance the conservation status of the site. Engage conservation volunteers and the general public in this work at all levels.

3.6Leading, inspiring and developing volunteer and education groups. Organising and leading volunteer days and school visits alongside the Heritage Engagement Officer.

3.7Maintain an informed working relationship with forestry consultants and contractors.

3.8Day to day assistance with angling activities, as directed.Checking permits and overseeing fish stock deliveries. Writing weekly catch reports and dealing with angling enquiries.

3.9Actively promote the Friends of the Trust scheme.

3.10Ensuring proper care and maintenance of equipment, vehicles and facilities.

3.11Recording data from car park and people counters in agreed formats.

3.12Undertake training and development as required by the Trust, and be available to train colleagues.

3.13Carry out such other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Trust.

4SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

4.1Experience of managing volunteer individuals and groups.

4.2Experience of managing public access in the countryside.

4.3Knowledge of water and land based recreational activities.

4.4A good understanding of Dartmoor archaeology.

4.5Experience of basic tree inspection.

4.6Enthusiasm and knowledge for conservation, wildlife and habitat management.

4.7Experience in Fibreglass boat maintenance and repair.

CAPABILITIES:

4.8Ability to communicate well with colleagues, customers and an enthusiasm for assisting the general public.

4.9Basic IT skills.

4.10Good team worker and able to work alone, adaptable and enthusiastic, with practical skills.

4.11Thorough and conscientious worker with good cleaning skills.

4.12Ability to follow instructions and be self-motivated.

4.13Willing to be trained.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

4.14Current clean driving licence.

Desirable

4.15Tractor driving, Chainsaw, Woodchipper and Strimming certificate.

4.16Customer care qualification (e.g. Welcome Host.)

4.17Trailer towing qualification.
