CLASS TITLE:PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITIONIST SUPERVISOR

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work providing direct services, supervising nutrition and/or one or more nonprofessional staff, and coordinating the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children in a county public health unit or in a designated bi-county geographic area (where two counties have entered into an agreement to jointly provide a health care program) or supervising staff of a special nutrition project under the direction of a county public health unit or university. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the positions(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

  • Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Evaluates employees through establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities and meeting regularly with employees to ensure the established criteria are met.
  • Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings.
  • Directs the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources.
  • Supervises the work of personnel providing nutrition services.
  • Supervises the planning, developing, conducting, and evaluating of a nutrition program for a county health department or in a designated multi-county area.
  • Serves as a consultant on nutrition and dietetics to county health department staff and workers in allied community county health and social agencies, and plans for their in-service education.
  • Directs the preparation and selection of informational materials for use in a public health nutrition program and for dissemination to various communications media.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the science and current practice of nutrition or dietetics.
  • Knowledge of the concepts and theories of nutrition or dietetics as it relates to growth, development, health or disease.
  • Knowledge of nutritional and dietary assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of the methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data.
  • Ability to develop educational/training plans and supporting materials.
  • Ability to use various communication channels to provide education/training.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary data.
  • Ability to interview and counsel patients.
  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A registered dietician as defined by the American Dietetic Association and two years of professional experience in public health nutrition; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or food service management and two years of professional experience in public health nutrition; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in public health nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or food service management and one year of professional experience in public health nutrition.
