Sharpening the ‘Self-As-Instrument’:

Staying in Contact with Self and Other

A 2-day workshop (May 3 & 4) for increasing personal efficacy in the professional role – for leaders, executives, managers, facilitators and change agents.

Presenters: Martin Ringer and Doug Aberle

Why ‘self as instrument’?

This workshop is for people who are already competent in their roles but who want to increase their resilience, agility and stamina in their professional lives.

Once we reach a certain level of competence and maturity, our effectiveness is limited less by our knowledge and skills than by our personal efficacy as human beings. This includes our capacity to be aware of our selves and what is happening around us and our ability to recover quickly when we lose our emotional balance. For instance, when we have a ‘button’ pushed, it is easy to find oneself in emotional turmoil and hence to lose contact with our selves lose contact with others with whom we are interacting. Hence, in order to be fully effective at work we need to be able to:

·  Understand our capabilities, vulnerabilities and the ways in which we allow others to destabilize us

·  Notice and make sense of what is going on around us and in our own emotional and psychological worlds

·  Support ourselves to stay in constructive contact with ourselves and others

·  Mobilize our knowledge and skills even when we are stretched emotionally and intellectually

·  Be attuned to, and responsive to, the needs of those we serve.

This seminar series is intended to directly impact all of the above domains to enhance attendees’ efficacy in life and specifically at work.

Why attend?

·  To enrich your awareness of your own implicit patterns of “perceiving, believing and behaving” so as to build better understanding of how you relate to others and the world of work.

·  To better understand the psychodynamics of groups and individuals.

·  To enhance your capacity for maintaining in-the-moment contact with yourself and with others.

·  To improve your capacity for self-support so that you can mobilize your capabilities and function well in the face of challenging situations.

·  To ignite your curiosity and inspire you to keep pursuing these lines of learning.

The approach

The workshop will be highly interactive. Early in the workshop, participants will be offered a conceptual framework for thinking about ‘contact’ and ‘self-as-instrument’ and the remainder of the program will consist of sub-groups and the larger group working experientially to apply these concepts to their own lives.
