RULES and Preparation
The Maths Association of Tasmania holds a relay competition around the state for students in primary 5-6, high school 7-8, 9-10 and college 11-12.
The idea of this modified relay is aimed as collaborative learning activity prior to NAPLAN for Year 3 students.
How To
Divide the class into groups of 4 of mixed ability
You will need a judge for each group at the checking tables – perhaps some older student helpers
Print the questions, take them to the guillotine and slice and staple them in order for easy tear off during the relay
This makes 2 sets of questions. Make up to 8 question sets
Print the score sheets and answers and place on clipboard with a set of questions for each checking table judge.
Each group is allowed scrap paper and pencils at their workstation.
Start with 3 students at the workstation and a runner at the checking table
The runner becomes one of the students at the workstation when they have completed a question, swapping so that each student shares the runner job equally.
Start
All runners take question 1 to their workstation and returns to checking table waiting for the workstation to raise their hands when they are ready for their answer to be taken to the checking station for judging.
Students at workstation work on question placing their first answer in the 1st Attempt box. They raise their hands to signal for the runner to come and collect the question sheet. The runner runs to workstation, collects question sheet and takes to checking station.
If it is correct answer
The judge at the checking station keeps the question, marks on the score sheet with a tick and gives the next question to the runner.
The runner runs to the workstation with the next question and swaps with the next person in the group that is to be runner. They return to the checking table and wait for the workstation to signal they are ready with raised hands.
If it is incorrect answer
The judge sends the runner back to the workstation with the question sheet so they can make another attempt at an answer. The runner returns to the checking table and waits for the workstation to signal they are ready with raised hands. The students at the workstation discuss their next answer.
Students may choose to write PASS if they cannot decide on an answer.
Continues until all questions have been issued or time limit of 1 hour has been reached.
Set up for 6 groups of 4
6 judges needed for checking tables.
Make it easier: issue each group 5 hint cards they can trade with the teacher for help
Next time to make more challenging try making the runner run clockwise around the checking tables before they can give their question sheet to the judge
