Step / Description / Hazard / Controls1 / Inspect work area. Be conscious of hazards such as clutter, spills flammable materials or sources of ignition i.e. incandescent lamps/welding, grinding or cutting equipment. Inspect fuel pump pressure testing gauges and hoses prior to use. / Trip, fall, spill--Fire, explosion-- / Remove clutter and clean up spills. Remove flammables and sources of ignition. Note location of fire extinguisher/s and fire blanket/s. Do not use damaged gauges or hoses, and report to teacher/supervisor at once and remove from shop area.
/ Turn vehicle off and allow it to cool down. / Fire, explosion, burns / Do not release fuel pressure over a hot engine to prevent fire, explosion and burns.
/ Release fuel pressure according to the specific procedure outlined by the vehicle manufacturer. / Improper or sudden release of fuel pressure can cause risk of fire/explosion or unwanted skin exposure to fuel. / Follow procedure carefully when releasing pressure. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. If exposed to fuel, remove fuel soaked clothing and wash skin immediately.
/ Connect fuel gauge using the fittings or adapters appropriate for the specific vehicle. Once all fittings are tightened, energize fuel pump for 2 to 3 seconds only. Inspect connections for leaks. / Fire, explosion, unwanted exposure to fuel. / Correct any leaks by releasing fuel pressure according to the specific procedure outlined by the vehicle manufacturer. Adjust and or tighten the connections.
/ Test vehicle fuel pump as described in service manual. Keep the gauge and hoses away from hot or moving parts / Fire, explosion, exposure to fuel. / Never allow hoses to become burned or damaged by hot or moving parts.
/ When test is completed, fuel pressure must be released as described in the manufacturer's guide before removing gauge set. / Fire, explosion, exposure to fuel / Release fuel pressure according to manufacturer's procedure. If exposed to fuel remove saturated clothing and wash affected area immediately.
