Dear Student and Parent/Guardian,

¡Bienvenidos a Walter Payton y a mi clase de español! This will be a productive and memorable year of learning, growth and fun. Most days I am available before and after school to help my students. I am here to assist, so please make an appointment with me to discuss anything at all. The best way to reach me is by email at . Below is some information about my class policies.

Course Description

In Spanish II, students will expand their knowledge of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and the cultures and practices of the Spanish-speaking world through the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will continue their progress towards mastery of the present and preterit tenses, as well as begin to work with the imperfect, perfect, future, conditional and subjunctive tenses. The increase in the quantity and quality of listening and reading comprehension enables students to successfully negotiate communicative tasks and social situations. Spanish is the primary vehicle for classroom communication. Prerequisites: Language I credit (semesters 1 & 2) or WPCP language placement exam.

Semester grades will be based on the following:

Tests, quizzes 50%

Projects 20%

Homework, active, engaged participation 20%

Final exam 10%

Tests and quizzes will be based on material presented in class and students will be made aware of test dates. Occasional pop quizzes may be given. An exam will be given at the end of each semester, the final one being cumulative.

Active participation is vital to effective language acquisition. The majority of learning takes place in class. Students must be present in order to participate. Students with unexcused absences will lose all participation points for that day. Participation means more than simply answering the teacher’s questions -- it also includes:

§  asking thoughtful and appropriate questions: the spirit of inquiry!

§  communicating in Spanish

§  involvement in whole class, small group, and individual activities

§  coming to class with all required materials (see below)

§  maintaining a cooperative and positive attitude for the classroom and the people around you

Homework and projects help students practice, review, reinforce, and extend material learned in class. Homework will be assigned for every class meeting with rare exceptions and is to be handed in at the beginning of class on the day it is due. Projects and presentations will be assigned occasionally throughout the semester.

Regarding absences and late work:

§  Students who are absent from class are responsible for obtaining and making up all missed assignments, tests and quizzes. I will not track students down.

§  Most assignments and handouts can be obtained on the class website at: gallegoscentral.pbworks.com

§  Students have until the next class period to make up work. In cases of long-term absence, it is the student’s responsibility to meet with me as soon as possible in order to arrange a plan for submitting missed assignments.

§  Late will not be accepted, except in the event of an excused absence.

Materials

Each student is required to bring the following materials to every class meeting: textbook, workbook, and writing tools. Students are encouraged to maintain a separate binder with dividers for the class, as they will be receiving a lot of information. Habitually coming unprepared to class will negatively impact the student’s participation grade.

Other materials I strongly recommend that students have in their possession, but need not bring to class every day, include a set of blank 3x5 index cards (for vocabulary words), a good Spanish/English dictionary, and a copy of “501 Spanish Verbs.”

Extra credit

Extra credit is offered at the discretion of the teacher. Student requests for extra credit will not be fulfilled.

I look forward to watching every one of my students grow as we create a more culturally-aware, multi-lingual society!

Sincerely,

Katie Gallegos, Spanish Teacher
