All Call for Sustainability Presenters

For the last Louisville Metro Sustainability Committee meeting of 2012 on Thursday, December 6 at 3:00pm, I am looking for sustainability organizations and businesses to present for two minutes each about their work and offerings. We want to introduce the community to innovative, inspiring, creative people and initiatives related to sustainability. Your organization or business will have two minutes of free publicity to tell Louisville about your mission or services. The meeting will be broadcast live on MetroTV, rerun, and posted online. The first 30 people to respond will receive slots to speak, with the hope to spotlight organizations that do not have a big budget. If you would like to address the committee, please contact my office at 574-1109 or email Katie Holmes at .

Clean Air Champion Award

On November 14th the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (APCD) presented the “Clean Air Champion Award” to Betty Shelton of the Billy Goat Hill Community Garden for the many volunteer hours she has spent cutting the garden’s grass with the Electric “Goat” Lawn Mower and trimming with a battery powered weed-eater. Mayor Betty Shelton lives in the Sacred Heart Village Apartments and is a former Mayor of Parkway Village, a sixth-class city within Louisville Metro. It’s amazing to watch Mayor Betty maneuver the Electric Goat around the 42 raised garden beds and other obstacles within the garden. The Ninth District is proud to be home to the Billy Goat Hill Community Garden and is thankful for the work done by volunteers at the garden, including Mayor Betty, which makes our community more sustainable. Visit the Billy Goat Hill Community Garden’s website. Learn more about the Electric Goat Lawn Mower. Find resources and incentives to make the air cleaner from APCD.

Enter to Win a Rain Barrel

During the month of November, if you create a new profile and fill out the sustainability survey on the Green Triangle website, update your survey, or post on the forum, you will be entered into a drawing to win a rain barrel. This rain barrel was donated by Coca-Cola and comes with a kit to easily install it on a gutter on your home. Visit the Green Triangle website today to help quantify the steps our community is taking to improve sustainability. Make a new profile, update your survey, or post on the forum to be entered to win. The Green Triangle survey asks you questions about what you are doing to be more green, and we track all the steps the 9th District is taking to see what a great difference we are making. For instance, as of early October, 9th District residents reported that they walk or bike a total of413 miles a week instead of driving. This saves997 gallons of gas per year, which saves the release of17,584 pounds of Carbon Dioxide per year.

District 9 Actor in StageOne Play

Submitted by StageOne: A young actor, Emma Chandler, from District 9 will be performing in StageOne Family Theatre’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the Kentucky Center this Holiday season. The play is a story about the Herdman children – “the worst kids in the whole town” - who force their way into the church’s annual Christmas pageant and cause havoc for everyone. It’s one of the funniest and heart-felt shows of the season. Emma Chandler is an 8th grader at Barret Middle School and plays Maxine in the play. This is Emma's second play with StageOne. She was Simone in last year's production of Madeline's Christmas.

The public performances of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the Kentucky Center are November 24, December 8 & 15 at 2pm & 5pm; and on December 20 at 10am & 12pm. Light Up Louisville

Light-Up Louisville has been a tradition for more than three decades for thousands of residents and visitors to our city. For its 32nd year, the city’s annual celebration launching the holiday season is expanding and moving to 4th Street, creating a four-block festival of lights set to music between the Galt House and Fourth Street Live. Light Up Louisville begins the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 23), with the arrival of Santa Claus who will help illuminate downtown Louisville, followed by fireworks – all centered at new locations – starting from 4th and Main Streets all the way to Fourth Street Live! See a schedule of events.
The big transformation is the addition of the 40 Nights of Lights component featuring a nightly light show set to music on 4th St. Along the corridor, tree and street lights will be synchronized with the main music and light shows at Fourth Street Live! and the Galt House Hotel. The nightly spectacle also includes light projections on buildings along 4th Street.
A new holiday activity that people will enjoy is the addition of an ice skating rink in the heart of Fourth Street Live!. The rink will use a synthetic ice which will ensure its availability throughout the holidays even if outdoor temperatures stay above freezing. The fee for skating is $5 an hour for adults, $3 for children under 18. Daily rates are $10, and a season pass is $40. Skates will be available to rent for $2. The ice skating rink will operate: Sunday-11:30am–8pm, Monday- Thursday- 11:30am-9pm, Friday and Saturday- 11:30am-Midnight. Learn more about Light Up Louisville.
