MEETING MINUTES –APRIL 21,2014

Dave Gearhart called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. There were 30 members, guests and staff present.

Next Friends’ Meeting – May 19, 2014 - nominations for officers will be made and elections will be in June. Time to be announced. Watch your e-mail.

Business Expo: Downtown Moneta – April 25th - 12 p.m. -5:00 p.m.

27th Annual Take Pride in SML Clean-up Event-May 3rd-need volunteers

Annual Meeting –May 19th

Bedford Co. Fishing Clinic – June 7th - need 8 TO 10 volunteers

Youth Fishing Tournament - June 14t h - need volunteers

Music in the Park – May 24th, June 28th, July 26th, August 23rd

The minutes of the March 24, 2014 meeting were approved.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

ADOPT A HIGHWAY -Donna Gearhart

Absent- Dave said we would schedule another cleanup near the end of May to spruce up for tourist season.

BOAT COMMITTEE-Jim Gearhart

Jim presented the signs that Larry Jackson had obtained and they will be used at the Business Expo and for other events.

JIM has ordered the boat, which will take approximately 8 weeks to build. Pictures will be displayed periodically on the web site.

LECTURE SERIES- Shearer Rumsey/Kit Harahan

Absent- Patti reported the $251.49 was the net income from the series.

MUSIC IN THE PARK-Ray Judd

The bands and cloggers have been secured.

More sponsors are needed and Sally needs their names, addresses and phone numbers by May 5 for printing.

PUBLICITY- Sally Hutslar

She said she could not attend the picnic and asked for someone to take photographs-also to take pictures of any friends’ events that she cannot attend.

She also thanked all who helped with the landscaping and mulching.

TRAILS-Jim Gutzwiller

Absent, Dave reported that there were only three participants in the last trails day and reminded the group that they meet every first and third Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.

BEDFORD CO. FISHING CLINIC-6/7

8 volunteers, at least, are needed for this event.

YOUNG ANGLERS FISHING TOURNAMENT-6/14-Bob Phipps

Bob said he has signed the sponsors from last year and is looking for more. He said all is on track.

VOLUNTEER HOURS-Ann Marie Smith

Absent but Jim Dodd reported that 20 members had reported 218 hours. The total for the year is 454 and cumulative is 62,868.

Kathy thanked Jim Gerhart for forwarding information to her and said she constantly needs information.

PARK STAFF REPORTS /INTERPRETERS REPORT-

Brian Heft – Brian expressed his appreciation for the aid of the Friends in mulching and programs. He feels the positions of assistant park ranger and chief ranger will soon be filled. The current 3 park rangers are doing well. Chad Shelters from Bear Creek State Park will be assisting with law enforcement.

Jeanette Lawler- Jet started by thanking the “egg stuffers” and the Friends who assisted with the Easter event. She also thanked the trails group and Brian for the live rabbits. She then outlined the several opportunities for Friends to volunteer. There were lists available at the meeting and on line. She will not be able to attend the next meeting.

James Harlow- James distributed some tee shirts that had accumulated. He also awarded Opalee Jacquot with a 3000-hour plaque to be placed on a new bench.

We will have no Americorp volunteer because of the lack of housing. There will be a group of YCC boys for three weeks beginning June 22.

Brian interjected that they are in need of concession workers.

The meeting adjourned at 11:30 to a picnic honoring Molly Ward, Virginia’s Secretary of Natural Resources who was visiting the park.
