The Foshay Learning Center Instrumental Music Department
High School Advanced Band
Vincent P. Womack, Band Director
This course focuses on the study and performance of difficult band literature covering many genres and styles. Participation in performances, maintenance and care of the instrument and music, and effective individual practice are some key facets of this course. This group represents the very best our school and community has to offer musically. There are frequent rehearsals outside of the regular scheduled time that are necessary to attain a higher performance level. Many of the physical aspects of a marching band are consistent in this group.
To receive an A in this class, one must earn a combined average of 90% or better in the following areas:
Attendance
Regular Home Practice and Weekly quizzes
Bandsmanship
Midterm
Final
Attendanceis important (Nothing is better than being here)!
Weekly quizzes involve demonstrating an understanding of instrumental music performance techniques and accuracy in music performance. There will be a quiz grade given every week. Many, if not most, aspects of this class are team oriented and there may be weeks where the level of cooperation, efficiency, and musical proficiency are high and unanimous. In this event, there may be no quiz given but the entire group or section will be given a grade of “A” equaling 100 points. Otherwise, weekly quizzes involve each individual student performing alone before the instructor and class. The weekly quiz grade counts for 20% of the semester grade.
Bandsmanship involves effort in practicing and improvement, maintaining music, the instrument, the facility, uniform, and involvement in extra-musical activities (i.e. church performances, solo and ensemble festivals, and honor groups). Participation in designated performances is also involved here. Bandsmanship counts for 20% of the semester grade.
The midterm will be a performance exam occurring sometime after the eighth week. Some portion of the midterm may be written. Scales and sight-reading may also be involved here. The midterm will count for 20% of the semester grade.
The final will be a comprehensive exam, both performance and written, involving material covered during the semester. Scales and sight-reading will also be involved here. The final counts for 20% of the semester grade.
