What’s the business all about?
The business is Resource Management Systems (RMS). They are a friendly, down to earth team of three people, based in Mexborough, that design and implement planning and scheduling software solutions. Established in 1993, they formed a highly successful association with Preactor in 1995, becoming a Preactor Solutions Provider. This means that RMS effectively take the world-leading production scheduling software produced by Preactor and then tailor/design it to suit the specific needs of their clients. Not only do the team deal with the design and implementation of these systems they also provide ongoing support to their clients who have these systems in place. With a wide variety of customers in both Europe and the US they service sectors including engineering, automotive, ceramics, electrical, food, furniture, glass, plastics, pharmaceuticals, printing, telecommunications, the textiles & timber industries. The team all work together in an open plan office where relevant discussion, sharing of ideas and asking for help or input are all encourage and commonplace. What would you be doing?
Working alongside a highly experienced team your primary responsibility will be to customise and programme the Peractor Finite Capacity Scheduling system. This will involve learning and applying a very specific set of configuration classifications, commands, programming and script mainly carried out interface to existing MRP / ERP systems in order to collect data. You responsibilities and role will evolve as your knowledge increases and of course in response the projects and clients you are working with, but typical tasks might include:
- Attending preactor user and configuration testing (1 week in Chippenham, Wiltshire)
- Secondment (1 week) to the Preactor International support team
- Working with the existing Engineer to learn about the system and support elements of his work
- Working with the field consultant to identify the specific pieces of customisation and coding to respond to customer requests and project planning to deliver these components
- System testing including user acceptance testing
- Contributing ideas of content to customer quotes, specifications or tenders
- Programming using C# or VB.net in their specific script format
- Providing technical and user support using remote control (Webex) and over the phone
- Technical issue investigation and resolution
- Writing specific scheduling rules where performance and optimisation become an issue
- Report customisation using the MS reporting services interface
- Conducting research on new technologies, applications and ways of working so that you can offer colleagues and customers new insights
- Administration of internal systems and databases
- Providing support for the Technical Manager or other colleagues as a key part of the team
What type of person are they looking for?
They are looking for a budding software engineer with a friendly, personable style, a desire to grow their career in their business and a genuine interest in how business works. The successful candidate will:
- Be a graduate from Software Engineering, Software Development , Programming, Computer Science or similar degree
- Have experience of programming in either VB.net or C#
- Be an adept user of MS Office including Excel, Word and Outlook
- Be interested in how business works and meeting customer needs
- Have excellent communication skills; most importantly on the phone
- Be good at planning, organising and prioritisation of their work in order to meet deadlines
- Be personable, down to earth and friendly, able to work well in a small team
- Be bright and a quick learner

Starting salary: £17,500pa
Location: Unit F8, Mexborough Business Centre, College Road, Mexborough, S64 9JP
Start date: December 2013, or sooner
Length of internship: Twelve months, with a real opportunity to secure a permanent role
