In 2014, theShelbyCountySchoolsBoard ofEducationadopted aset of ambitious,yetattainablegoals for school and studentperformance.TheDistrict is committed to thesegoals, asfurtherdescribed in our strategicplan,Destination 2025.

By 2025,

80%ofour studentswill graduatefromhighschool,college orcareerready.

90%ofstudentswill graduateon time.

In order to achievetheseambitiousgoals, wemustwork collectivelyto provide ourstudents with high-quality,CollegeandCareer Readystandards-aligned instruction. Acknowledgingthe need to develop competence in literacyand language as thefoundations for alllearning,ShelbyCountySchoolsdeveloped theComprehensiveLiteracyImprovementPlan (CLIP). TheCLIPensuresaqualitybalanced literacyapproach to instruction that results in highlevels of literacylearningfor all students, acrossallcontentareas. Destination 2025 and theCLIPestablish common goalsandexpectations forstudent learningin all grade levelsandaretheunderpinningforthe development of theEnglish/Language Arts curriculum.

HowtoUsetheElementaryLibraryCurriculumand Resources

TheK-5LibraryCurriculum is based on Common CoreEnglishLanguageArtsStandards(CCSS.ELA)aligned with AmericanAssociation of SchoolLibrarians (AASL) standards to providelibrarians with a frameworkfor theirinstructionthroughout theyear.

Organizedbyquarter,StudentLearningTargets areprovided for eachgrade thatreflects the CCSS.ELAand AASLstandards. Paired withlibrarycurriculumresources, the curriculumguideprovides abalanced planforhigh qualityinstruction andassessment. By aligningtheAASLstandards with theCCSS.ELA standards, librarians are able to teachlibraryspecificskills whilemaintainingthe focus on literacyandlanguage. Thecurriculum andresources allow librarians to teachmeaningfulandrelevant skills that areconsistent withthe objectivessetbyCLIP. This curriculum is designed to be flexible, aslibrariesdifferwidelyin how theyarescheduled, duetoenrollment and schoolfocus.
