Security Officer/Day Warden

Salary Scale 2/3 APT&C Points 11-17 £15,873 - £17,568 per annum
Job Purpose
To ensure a safe, secure and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.
Responsible to the Campus Operations and Residential Services Manager for the provision of an efficient and effective service to residential students to ensure that student health, safety and safeguarding are maintained. Responsible for maintaining student discipline and ensuring allocated residential blocks are monitored on a daily basis. Day Warden / Security Officer will also be required to provide a detailed shift report in the required format, for evening handover and distribution to key staff. All designated residential block matters will be in conjunction with the direction/guidance and management of the Campus Operations and Residential Services Manager
Key Responsibilities
  • To be proactive in providing a safe and secure environment for all users of College facilities.
  • To patrol buildings, car parks and grounds on a regular basis throughout the shift. In particular key areas identified as high risk.
  • To meet and greet resident students during enrolment so that they are aware of the members of staff responsible for their accommodation.
  • To assist with keeping a record of obstructive parking, persistent offenders vehicles to be identified and details taken. To identify unauthorised vehicles parking in designated areas and take the appropriate action.
  • Conduct weekly/scheduled water temperature and fire control equipment in college halls of residence.
  • To provide guidance to the students in the use of cleaning materials and aids so that they can be responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Ensure that the common rooms, kitchens, circulation areas and boot rooms are maintained in a clean and tidy condition at all times.
  • To promote and enhance the experience of students on campus, developing a sense of community and to respond in the case of individual problems providing sensitive pastoral care.
  • To assist with room checks for students who have failed to turn up to classes.
  • To ensure the residential environment is one where students can live and work without disruption within the framework provided by College regulations to include the disciplinary process.
  • To hold monthly block review meetings and ensure any actions are appropriately followed up.
  • To develop in students a collective responsibility to be aware of the difficulties or problems of others and to offer such support and help for each other as is appropriate.
  • To be responsible for all health & safety issues within designated residential block(s), effectively administer first aid, where appropriate, and to act as Fire Marshall for the residential block(s) and to assist in the organisation and conduct termly fire drills and evacuations. Deadlines will be set by Head Warden.
  • To assist the Campus Operations and Residential Services Manager with responsibility for designated residential block(s) ensuring that:
  • Litter is kept to a minimum
  • Deliver letters/circulars to student rooms
  • Manage all notice boards
  • Fire doors are not propped open
  • Door closers are not disconnected
  • Students do not leave items outside their room doors;
  • All damage or maintenance needs are logged and reported appropriately
  • Hourly FE block patrols are conducted as directed by the Campus Operations and Residential Services Manager together with regular communication with Staff.
  • Organise transport and accompany residential students on trips to health centres.
  • To use CCTV surveillance and other electronic security systems.
  • To carry out random security and ID checks and to escort unauthorised visitors off the premises.
  • To play an active role inputting data and producing reports and maintaining accurate records in support of the College procedures and policies.
  • To monitor and enforce relevant College polices and to report any serious breaches.
  • To work as part of the Estates team, flexibly and efficiently to maintain the highest professional standards and to promote and implement the policies of the College.
  • To assist the Estates team with portering, and minor repairs ensuring the College premises are kept clean and tidy and emergency exits are free from obstruction.
  • To act as a designated Duty First Aider, and designated Fire Warden.
  • To be aware of and implement health and safety regulations.
  • To ensure provided uniforms are to be worn to maintain a smart appearance at all times.
  • To provide a professional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • To ensure that quality standards are set, monitored and reviewed within the section.
  • To demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing demands in personal, sectional or the Colleges workload.
  • To take responsibility for one’s own professional development and continually update as necessary.
