INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION OF NORWAY:
The 2011 Norwegian development budget is $5.06 billion, representing 1% of GNI.
The objective of Norwegian development policy is to fight poverty and promote social justice.
The Norwegian Agency for Development Assistance (NORAD) is a directorate under the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs seeking to:
Contribute to effective management of development funds; and
Evaluate and assure the quality of the results of Norwegian Development Cooperationin developing countries and the international community.
Norwegian development cooperation focuses on the following priorities: environmental protection and sustainable development; peace building; human rights and humanitarian assistance; oil and clean energy; women and gender equality; good governance and the fight against corruption; and health-related initiatives in relation to the Millennium Development Goals.
Norwaycooperates withBolivia, Brazil, the Andean region and the AmazonRiver basin on the management of national resources (Oil for Development Program), democratic institutions and citizen participation, environment, indigenous peoples’ rights, and corporate social responsibility.
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: OBJECTIVES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Norway’s foreign policy is to defend Norwegian interests and values, and at the same time contribute to international solidarity and cooperation through:
Eradicating poverty by following the UN Millennium Development Goal of reducing by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a day by 2015;
International development to improve human rights;
Increasing strategies for debt relief;
Focus on democratic development;
Assistance in peace and reconciliation processes; and
Humanitarian relief.
INVOLVEMENT IN WESTERN HEMISPHERE:
Norwaycooperates withBolivia, Brazil, the Andean region and the AmazonRiver basin on the management of national resources (Oil for Development Program), democratic institutions and citizen participation, environment, indigenous peoples’ rights, and corporate social responsibility.
Norway has embassies in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, United States of America, and Venezuela.
Nicaragua
In 2009, Norway contributed $20.07 million to Nicaragua for the priority areas of anti-corruption, education, climate and environment, gender equality, and culture.
